Jesus, I know Greigy died but Richie looks awful these days :(

This is very well intentioned but it seems pretty awkward to me. No Bill Lawry there yet. I understand from radio reports he's pretty devastated.

tony led a unique life. born in one country. captained the national team of another and then finished his life as a citizen of a third nation. spent his life first playing and then commentating on a game he excelled in and loved till his last breath. was one of the architects in changing the economics of a global sport. toured all over the world. made friends and rubbed shoulders with the best of the best. it was a great life. wish he had lived a few more years. but still, well done dude. there are not many who get to spend their time this well.

Damn! So Sad! :(

"They're dancing in the aisles in Sharjah!" those words still ring in my head.

Rest In Peace.

Just caught it in the papers .... what a loss.

I have the 438 DVD and that game, great as it was, wouldn't just have been the same without him and his commentary.

"This is the greates 1day international ever played!" I took his word for it.

A giant of cricket indeed - and will be sadly missed!!

Shocking news. RIP Tony.

Many is the "telecorst" that he brightened up. Before that a very fine player for both Sussex and England; my first ever sporting hero.

It is hard to take in because he always seemed so full of life. I hadn't heard about his lung cancer until I read the report of his death this morning. It sounds horrible to say it but depending on his prognosis on that score, there may be something to be said for a speedier check out.

A life well lived. But 66 is still too young.

While I was never a huge fan of his commentary, I can't deny that he was probably the 2nd most iconic voice (behind Richie) in world cricket. It's sad that I've seen so little of him as a cricketer, as he possesses a truly wonderful test record as a batting allrounder. Will endeavor to find what I can on youtube immediately. Also he will always be well loved for the part that his commentary played in raising the pride of sub-continental cricket in general and Sri Lankan cricket in particular. May he rest in peace.

Very sad and, inspite of the diagnosis, very sudden too. :(

A genuine enthusiast who knew the sport backwards. I won't pretend I always agreed with him but he was never shy of an opinion and his unique and easily-parodied voice has, ironically for the ultimate outsider, become an integral part of the English winter (for cricket fans with a Sky subscription, anyway) with 9's feedback being broadcast around the globe.

Vale Tony.

Shocking news.

Gave his life to cricket. Player, captain, commentator, analyst and a chief instigator in the largest movement in modern cricket history.
