England squad discussion

Kind of side with Halsey on Wilshere. Think he does lots of aspects of his game well, is clearly quite skilful and technically OK, but he never really impacts games. I mean, in the last four years he's played about as much as he's missed, but Arsenal have never really suffered in his absence in the same way they clearly missed Ramsey and Walcott this season. He's a bit similar to Rosicky in my opinion but without the experience and better football IQ.

Arsenal have more players who can do the Wilshere-type job though. It's probably understandable that he'd be missed less.

I'd rather take Carrick, would have no problem with not having another deep-lying midfielder in the squad though, it's where Wilshere has played this year, and Milner could do it.

6 goals from Lampard is a pretty poor performance, and clearly shows a downward spiral not a regular starter, not even sure he's been that deep lying when playing. If he isn't going to start he's not an impact player. So I'm not sure what he'd be in the squad for. Surely too, if you take Jones then he covers that position.
Well he's certainly deeper lying than he was in his prime. Chelsea play the likes of Willian, Hazard and Oscar all ahead of him nowadays. He's similar to Gerrard in that his role has started to shift, and no one's talking about Gerrard not going because his goals have dried up.

One of carrick or Barry has to go for the deepest in midfield role as backup to gerrard. Lampard cant play that.
Plus another issue with him would be will hodgson bench him? He would essentialy have to be backup and he is not a great super sub.

That's not the argument. The point was that currently Joe Allen is better than Wilshere, whoever has more talent.

EDIT: Will add that although I seem to be in a minority on this one, I've never been convinced Wilshere has any special talent anyway. He obviously had a big injury but he didn't seem particularly impressive to me before then anyway.
Nah disagree on the first part too in terms if being better now. Unless you are factoring in injury.

Anyways seems there was misunderstanding of the argument on gimh and youre part anyway.

Gerrard been better than him though easily. Plus is captain, more versatile and been better for England. Also Lampards game was more about goals to begin with.

We'd all take Barry too, I think. Gerrard has played deepest in midfield for the second half of the season. I don't love it, but it's at least a positive move and Carrick has had a bad season and a history of falling out with the England setup.

Squad Selector | FIFA World Cup 2014 | Sky Sports

The wisdom of crowds has done a better job than most of Sky's pundits. Walker's the one dud pick but he's injured anyway and it's not like any of the other options aren't ****.

Surprised that Lambert gets in ahead of Carroll, always feel like I'm objecting to the inevitable there but it seems most people agree.

I'm shocked that Kevin Davies doesn't pick Carroll either.

Only differences to my squad are Forster for Ruddy (the third choice keeper surely the least interesting selection anyway), Walker for Captain Racist (who is, if available, a better pick even if Walker wasn't broken and with Milner and Jones in the squad a 2nd specialist right back seems unnecessary anyway) & Lambert for Carroll.

Lambert's just not an international player. Carroll, for all his limitations, just could conceivably be.

I got the call from Roy and agree England team should be about the young players. I think it best I retire from England team now.

We have a great manager and team and I wish them only success. I will be supporting them like a true fan. Thanks to everyone for everything

Reads to me like he wasn't being offered one as the phone call meant he's not in the 30. Personally I'd have taken him as first choice left back but I know I'm in the minority there.

Have to say that watching Shaw yesterday I was much more impressed than I thought I'd be.

I think I'd have taken him but it does suggest that:
1. He's going to play more attacking football than last time
2. He won't pick underperforming players on reputation.

I've not received a call either, so I think it's time for me to retire from international football too.

The best goalkeeper England never had. Pothas to confirm.

Glad Cole left out, hope we leave out Lampard too. Go with the kids as we have no chance anyway.
Well no retirement news so I am guessing that means he is in unless he is happy to be one of the reserves, reflects fairly well on him if he is, suggests he might be a good man to have around the squad.

Lumps is in, would much rather have another striker or winger for an impact player. If Lampard and Gerrard start in the first game I will scream.

Good group of youngsters though, let's just hope they play.
