Once again, Collingwood over Mahanama is Meh. And there is no daylight between Solkar and Sobers and perhaps Tillekaratne. All were insanely good at short leg.
mahanama was very good. but collingwood was better because of the kind of catches he took. of course, mahanama might have done the same and it's just the case that we don't know about it.

i stand by solkar and sobers. tillekratne compared to them? to use your words....Meh.

Just remembered, I was very impressed with Steve Smith. Lightning in the field, good hands, despite looking pretty unathletic and a bit chubby. Definitely potential there.
That's why he was known as the "specialist fielder", before he became the "joker" in the recent Ashes that is.

Rhodes at a canter, took fielding to a different level, set the example that every other team has looked to follow; a professional approach to fielding.
Actually, there were several before him that set the example that he followed. Clive Lloyd, Viv Richards and Allan Border for starters. It probably all goes back to Colin Bland who was probably the first to take fielding really seriously.

Tillekaratne was damn good. Easily the best short leg fielder in last 30 years. IIRC has the highest number of short leg and silly point catches by a player. David Boon, and few Indians were exceptional at close in, but never seen them take full blooded sweeps without ducking, which Tillekaratne was famous to do.

Based on the last couple of decades:

1. AB de Villiers (cover)
2. Herschelle Gibbs (mid-wicket)
3. Ricky Ponting (slip / mid off)
4. Mark Waugh (slip / mid-on)
5. Jonty Rhodes (backward point)
6. Andrew Symonds (utility)
7. Jack Russell (keeper)
8. Brett Lee (somewhere deep)
9. Shane Warne (slip)
10. Jimmy Anderson (utility)
11.

Flintoff the obv answer as said by others but Gough was a fantastic outfielder and was, suprisingly, Andre Nel-- amazingly agile for a big man.

I agree there were others before Rhodes, but I think Rhodes was the first to popularise it beyond his own team, he was so spectacular. It even seeped to junior levels where in fielding practice every kid wanted to be Jonty Rhodes.

I hear from my dad and his mates that Clive Lloyd was the an absolutely amazing fielder. Possibly the fastest mover across the ground in the game.

I've just rembered, Chris Lewis must be in with a shout. A fine athletic fielder. Best of all, he was that rare all-rounder whose batting and bowling were of exactly equal quality.

That bald(ing) fella?
Chris Harris. Unreal fielder. Finest moment was in the 1992 World Cup, running David Boon out for 100 directly side-on from well outside the field. I've seen nothing that suggests he wasn't nigh on, or equal to, Rhodes as a backward point fielder.

I remember seeing a clip on Youtube somewhere of Clive Lloyd fielding at leg slip to someone bowling darts, the batsman flicks it around the corner and he snaffles it clean as a whistle. It was astonishing.

And anyone who can do this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja4Ej_XfX6o - deserves a mention.

I'd like to see a worst fielding XI too. That'd get the giggles

Voted "other"...Colin Bland the best I have seen followed very closely by Derek Randall, Seymour Nourse and Valentine

Andrew Symonds, as said above by others. There were great fielders in specialist areas, Jonty Rhodes was a freak ground fielder and catcher. Ponting was deadly accurate inside circle but all round ability Andrew Symonds could be placed anywhere and be counted upon to be as good as anyone else in that spot.
