Steve Davies comes out

The most impressive thing is that he's come out right near the start of his career which would have taken some balls (hopefully his....), as there will be some administrators and potential sponsors who, wrongly IMO, will frown upon his lifestyle in the coming years.

should not have been an issue for him in the English dressing room still well done to him for coming out.

Yeah, quite. I hope he gets a warm hand on his entrance when he next appears.

Thanks to Julian Clary for that line.

Seriously, as Volts says quite a brave thing to do at the beginning of his career rather than the arse end (last gay pun, I swear) of it. Kudos to Alfie Thomas for his step, but he had a glittering career behind him whereas Steve's is all yet to come.

Would also take issue with The Sun's assertion he's only the third high profile British sportsman to come out after Thomas and Justin Fashanu; John Amaechi, one of the very few Brits to play NBA, has also made the move. I'm no basketball fan, but have at least heard of him.

Don't know where you got that from, but my twitter feed has Stephen Fry saying

Anyway, good on the bloke, and good on his team mates for being good about it.

Edit: I'm replying to a deleted post now :) Oh well, I'll leave it.
Never mind. Yeah, I thought the same thing, but the moment has passed. Suffice to say it was something expressed to me by someone from here, in another place :)

Come out of where?

Nah, good on him. Should be the biggest non-issue ever, but it isn't. Hopefully it's not too long until it is.
This.

Can't ever see a footballer coming out and being accepted sadly but i would like to think cricket fans will be more sensible.

This is still considerably more than in most countries, I think. The only one I know of in Norway was a handballer who retired a year after coming out. (He got badly sledged iirc, not as badly as Fashanu obviously but enough to take the fun out of sport.)

Judging by the responses and the fact that I couldnt care less myself shows we have come a long way.

I think the lack of negative reactions are equally, if not more, important than the actual coming out.

What gets me is that the people who may sledge him will go home and put a cd on of a singer who is openly gay or watch a film/tv show with a gay actor/host and think nothing of it. The hypocrisy of people makes you laugh sometimes.

I wish the guy well and if it helps others then great, still can't see a footballer being accepted though even 20 years after Fashanu came out.
