This is such a curse of the not-quite-good team. You do so well only to be destroyed by hacks.

I'm so confused as to why they're insisting on shoving santner at 6 when we have cdg and blunders. His main role is to bowl tidy overs, score 25 at 8 and dustbowl insurance. If you're wanting something else then he shouldn't be picked.

It'd be pretty funny if after all these years of talking about Anderson/Neesham, CdG just sneaks in there and has a better test career than either of them.

Think he'd be able to bat with more freedom at 8, too. Don't think the extra pressure of 6 is doing him any favours.

Not a bad day 1 score, but that’s obviously disappointing given how well placed we were at the half way point of the day. Hoping Blundell and the tail can somehow push us up to 350 tomorrow.

Seems like there’s a fair amount of swing about, so big pressure on Soult to do the business tomorrow morning.

I think the reverse applies for de Grandhomme and Blundell, less pressure / play your natural game at #7 and #8, so perhaps more benefit in the current line-up to have Santner at #6. May change from next season, could see either Blundell or Seifert at long term test #6.

de Grandhomme / Anderson (if bowling) seem a good fit at #7, able to counter-attack.

Optimistic. I'd be happy with 330 from here.

Watling should bat at #6 tbh, and if he's injured then Blundell should. Colin at #7 (tho #6 wouldn't offend me) with Santa at #8.

I can also see Watling or even Blundell playing at #5 as specialist batsmen (Blundell has batted #4 for Wellington). Not fussed really. Seifert/Cleaver hovering around the fringes is nice option depth to have for keepers since I think Seifert is the goods.

Well, can't complain with this score when you bowl first. But once again, much will depend on how we deal with the tail and then how we go about batting. Glad to see some fight in the guys after a poor start with the new ball. Cummings, Gabriel and Roach came back well and Reifer kept things tight just like Jason usually does. Shame Chase didn't do the same. The batting order will once again be reliant on how Kraigg and Shai do. But if Hetty gets going that would be a major boost aswell. Would also be great to see Ambris get in and show his potential. All in all, I'd say things are pretty even right now, the real question is can we put NZ on the back foot for the first time in this tour? That has to be the goal tomorrow.

Beej is probably done tbh

Think he'll remain first choice if fit. Strange times however for NZ's test specialists - Raval, Watling, Wagner, Blundell (though he may yet break into the limited overs side). They'll be playing so little test cricket over the next couple of years and both Watling and Wagner are on the wrong side of 30. Looks like there's enough depth in the keeping department if someone's needed to replace Watling in the medium term, though Wagner has shown himself to be indispensable so we'd better hope he has a good 5 years left in him.

Watling could be valuable as a specialist bat as it's quite likely we won't see Taylor after the 2019 world cup, now would be a good time to think about that.
