Corrected.Another player who made the transition to twirling late in his FC career was Lancs' own Mike Watkinson. He was never a world-beater, but his offies were considered - wrongly. Very, very badly wrongly - of sufficient quality for him to be selected for England as a specialist spinner only about a year after he switched. Debuted in tests in his mid-30s if memory serves.
Waugh's seam > his spin in the opinion of near enough everyone who watched him bowl the two (I didn't, only ever remember him as a spinner).Mark Waugh switched to off-spin when his back no longer permitted him to bowl his seam-up stuff too. Specialist bat, obv, but his offies were serviceable.
He was still bowling seam in the Sobers instance was he not?Malcolm Nash (a quality left arm swing bowler) experimented with left arm spin with historical consequences.
So overshadowing of his career that many casual observers thought he was a career spinner.
Waugh was able to bowl some bloody good wheels and hurry up a batsman with his mediums.Corrected.

No, was bowling spinHe was still bowling seam in the Sobers instance was he not?
Iverson was a modest wicketkeeper for most of his career, IIRR.
Putting full stops in the middle of clauses makes Baby Jesus cry.Corrected.

The Typhoon himself must be worthy of consideration for any Lancs Exiles XI. Played all his county cricket at Northants & was born near Bolton I believe.Andy Hayhurst, Jim Hilton and Jim Lomax (Somerset), Ken Higgs, Alan Wharton and Peter Marner (Leics), Noddy Pullar and David Green (Gloucs) Bob Berry (Derby and Worcs), Jim Cumbes (Worcs), Bob Barber and Willie Hogg (Warwicks) but the only other recent examples I can think of are Chris Schofield and the two Crooks - who thinking about it are Aussies and presumably therefore don't count?
I now have more details from his dad (who is a senior Army officer) who tells me that Ollie was born in Germany but "at no time was he, even briefly, German. We came home a few months after his birth and he has lived in Cyprus and Germany again but mainly Eastbourne. He is Sussex through and through."Rayner is always a case that's puzzled me, as I've never heard his full story. Is he just a case of his British parents being in Germany when he was born or is he actually of German extraction?
Oh well. It looks OK.Putting full stops in the middle of clauses makes Baby Jesus cry.
I just felt it would be easier to sign a local than an overseas player. Yes Saqlain was lethal; but Giles was pretty good aswell.Have you ever watched Saqlain Mushtaq bowl? If so, you would know during the peak period of his international career he was of the best ODI spinners going about.
of course currently there is also Jonathan Clare(Derbyshire) David Brown(Burnley/Gloucestershire), Lee Daggett(Bury/Warwickshire). We'll probably see more of Andrew Miller(Preston/Warwickshire) and John Simpson(Bury/Middlesex) who are both former England U19 players.Andy Hayhurst, Jim Hilton and Jim Lomax (Somerset), Ken Higgs, Alan Wharton and Peter Marner (Leics), Noddy Pullar and David Green (Gloucs) Bob Berry (Derby and Worcs), Jim Cumbes (Worcs), Bob Barber and Willie Hogg (Warwicks) but the only other recent examples I can think of are Chris Schofield and the two Crooks - who thinking about it are Aussies and presumably therefore don't count?
yeah played Second XI for Lancs between 2000-2002Did Daggett actually ever play for any Lancashire rep teams? (And not under-15 or the like - actual Second XI or similar) First I came accross him was taking that 8-for for Durham UCCE.
Never noticed Brown was from Lancs either TBH. That's yet another non-home-grown player on Gloucs' books.
No, but Saq & Giles can bowl tandem can't they?So you'd prefer an average of 25-26 to one of 11 or whatever it was Saqlain attained in his first few years for Surrey?
