Wasn't Rauf one of the first umpires to start giving them?
I remember Panesar getting some with batsmen playing with the bat behind the pad and the commentary team talking about how you never used to see them given out. Yadda yadda.

Edit ; Might've been Dar

Hair was one of the first, from memory. He was always more inclined to give batsmen out for not playing a shot when struck outside the line too. I'm pretty sure Giles was once changed to the end Hair was standing at versus the Windies when Chanders was pushing forward with his bat safely tucked away behind his pad specifically because Darrell was more of an "outer" than (IIRC) Taufel.

There's definitely been a change in the approach of umpires in favour of the bowler tho, presumably because of the introduction of Hawkeye. If one looks at the "wickets by method of dismissal" ratios of some of our better post-war offies, it's obvious Swann's proportion of leg-befores is much higher than some of his forebears. Laker took just 32/193 wickets by LBW (16.6%), Fred Titmus's ratio was 23/153 (15%) & dear old Embers took only 16/147 (10.9%) of his test scalps by that method.

In just 14 tests Swanny has already had more favourable LBW decisions (26) than either of the latter two.

I am glad with the introduction of UDRS many legit lbws which otherwise won't have been given are upheld now. That somewhat fractionally brings cheer to bowlers.

Don't give a **** tbh. Graeme Swann is the best bowler in the world.
Reasoning : Johnson is a crim and Steyn is **** against Engalnd. /joke (perhaps )
Add in the fact Swanneh is the best bloke eva.
Crims were born in Eng and exported (except for royal family)

Since cessation of this export trade about 200 years ago, Aussies are Aussies whilst Englishmen are crims, poms (acronym of "Prisoners of Her Majesty's Service" btw) and generally unwashed

Insult us by all means but please keep it accurate

poms (acronym of "Prisoners of Her Majesty's Service" btw)
"Prisoners of His/Her Majesty" and "Product of Mother England" etc are probably false etymologies. The OED favours "pommy" as a contraction of pomegranate, which in turn was Aussie rhyming slang for immigrant.

Anyhow Aussies are indeed criminals and by continuing to deny your crimes you're just diminishing your chances of parole.

If "parole" results in being sent back to England, think I'll skip the hearing

Was thinking about this earlier, when the commentary was talking about Swann's record of taking a wicket in the first over.

It gives him such a huge advantage over other spinners. In general, a spinner is brought on when the quicks haven't got a wicket for a while and don't look effective, and the batsmen are set. Swann, more than any other spinner in the world, neuters probably the toughest part of being a spinner in many respects.

If you are talking about numbers, it has a huge effect, because suddenly he not only gets a new batsman to bowl at, build pressure and attack, but the set batsman can't throw the kitchen sink at him early doors in an effort to stop him from settling, so he can attack at both batsmen.

North is Swann's bunny. All over him like a rash.Had him out 3 times in England and already here. Will probably get him in 2nd innings too and end his test career.
