Jos Buttler Appreciation thread

Is Jos Buttler better than Bradman?

I watched his innings against Sri Lanka earlier this year (the century at Lord's) and this was my response at the time:

That was a quality, back-to-the-wall century by Jos Buttler.

From 111/5 in 28.2 overs to 292/8 after 49.4 overs, he carried the innings together excellently after the drought of boundaries from the middle-order pairing of Gary Ballance and Joe Root.

Some fabulously clean hitting - akin to even De Villiers's brutal innings of 74 against Pakistan in the second ODI at Port Elizabeth.

It's such a shame that it ultimately came in vain.
Wonderful stroke-maker and somebody who I feel could become a marquee player for England in the future, particularly in LOIs.

When the thread was made he was a world class OD bat and meh FC bat. That's pretty much the same now at international level.

More than his batting, his keeping was disappointing. He played a bad shot, but then so did YK and Misbah in the first test. It happens. But dropping two fairly easy catches for a keeper in 1 day is quite worrying.

The worry is (as it was when first selected) is what impact his test batting will have on his ODI batting. It already affected his form in the summer. It would be a disaster if his confidence takes a real battering and he struggles to find his odi batting form. 3 formats for a wicketkeeperbatsman is hard - especially for someone like Buttler who is still learning his game. I think they'd have probably got rid off him at the start of this series if they had confidence in Bairstow's keeping.

I'm not sure the likes of Vaughan and Botham appreciated the irony when after the world cup they called for completely separate ODI and Test teams and for one not to influence the other - when they'd be calling for Buttler to be England wicketkeeper in test cricket on the back of his odi form, and Hales on the back of his T20 form.

Yeah, one thing I will say is I think Buttler's keeping has been decent even though he struggled today. Bairstow's keeping is a bit of an unknown at this stage. People didn't really appreciate it at the time, but I've always felt Kieswetter's injury and Davies giving up the gloves was bad from an England perspective.

Yes it certainly didn't help. There isn't much behind these two that are near ready. It's my understanding that Ben Cox of Worcestershire and Michael Bates are probably the best of the young wicketkeepers but neither are good bats and probably never will be. Unfortunately at the moment the likes of Foakes, Joe Clarke and Ben Duckett are promising bats but aren't keeping all the time for their counties.

Can't help but feel Buttler would be better off concentrating on ODI and T20 cricket and staying refreshed for that and Bairstow focuses on test cricket. Seems unlikely that Bairstow works out as a bat alone in test cricket but I could certainly get behind him as the wicketkeeper if (and it's a big if) his keeping is upto standard and I don't think it is. It's a limited sample size but in the 3 or so games I saw Bairstow keep in the last year he made big mistakes and looked untidy - and Buttler's keeping, for all it was bad today, has come along nicely.

If I was Bairstow I'd be busting a gut to show the England staff that I'm working on my keeping.

Agree entirely with the last point about Bairstow, he has kind of been ok since he came back but you still think he is unlikely to make it as a specialist bat.

I was one of those that was rather blase about Buttler in Tests despite his first class record, like most of us I really want him to be a success still but he needs dropping.

I didn't see Bradman bat and have only seen the same old film clips that most people have seen. But if forced to make a judgement I would say that Butler played shots today that Bradman probably didn't.

I will also jump on the bandwagon and say that he is a magnificent player. He hits the ball even harder than AB does, if you ask me. I never felt that AB had that power that someone like Viv, or Dhoni had but Buttler looks like he has it.
