South Africa Fury at Jones

It has emerged today that displeased South African cricket officials are demanding the suspension of TV commentator Dean Jones. This demand comes after the Aussie was alleged to have made bigoted remarks about Muslim batsman Hashim Amla, the South African batsman, calling him “the terrorist” when he took a catch in the second test against Sri Lanka.

South African cricket’s chief executive gerald Majola was stated as saying that they would be demanding his suspension with immediate effect and that they would be reporting the issue to the ICC.

“The switchboards of both Cricket South Africa and SuperSport have been jammed with calls from some very angry people,” Majola was reported as saying.

Jones was working for Sri Lankan broadcaster TenSports, whose commentary was also transmitted through South African channel SuperSport. Jones regularly commentates on cricket in the subcontinent, but it is likely that he may not do so again anytime soon, with Muslim communities likely to be outraged by these comments.
