Somerset signs Banks

Somerset has signed former West Indies offspinner Omari Banks for the 2008 season. The 25-year-old has represented West Indies in 10 Tests and 5 one-day internationals, since his international debut against Australia in 2003.

In his first Test, Banks made history when he was spanked by the Australians for 204 runs in 40 overs, the most expensive innings concession on Test debut. However, just a Test later he made his most memorable contribution for West Indies, scoring 47 not out of a record run-chase of 418.

Banks will count as a Kolpak player for the county, as he was born in Anguilla, a member of the British protectorate. Previously, Banks served two months with the Leicestershire second team, and one first team appearance against a touring Pakistan.
