Martyn to Open?

Adam Gilchrist has suggested Damien Martyn would make an ideal opening partner, for the upcoming ODI series against the World XI.

“I think Damien Martyn’s one, he’s got tremendous statistics having opened probably half a dozen times before for Australia” Gilchrist said.

With the axing of Matthew Hayden from the national one-day team, there has been a lot of speculation as to who will now open with Gilchrist. Young dynamo Michael Clarke looks the most likely, having performed the job of opener well in the past.

Surprisingly though Gilchrist did not mention Clarke, referring to Martyn, and Simon Katich as the most likely replacements for Matthew Hayden. Katich has had experience in the openers spot, performing the job consistently with NSW in domestic one-day cricket.

The much anticipated series will start this coming Wednesday, with the worlds best all-rounder Andrew Flintoff expected to play, despite missing the warm up game against Victoria.
