Jaques in for second Test

New South Wales opener Phil Jaques continued Australia’s summer of change with a call up into the squad for the second Test against South Africa in Melbourne.

Jaques replaces the injured Justin Langer for the Boxing Day Test and is likely to make his debut in the game after chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns announced Mike Hussey would remain in the number five slot.

The only other change for the Test will be the return of legspinner Stuart MacGill, who replaces Perth 12th man Stuart Clark.

The struggling Andrew Symonds retains his spot despite his Test average now only being 12.62.

Jaques was a red-hot tip for selection after a dynamic summer for his state which has seen score 400 runs in the Pura Cup competition at an average of 50.

He will be the third batsman to debut for Australia this summer.

Australia squad: Matthew Hayden, Phil Jaques, Ricky Ponting (capt), Brad Hodge, Michael Hussey, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken, Stuart MacGill, Glenn McGrath.
