Ireland crush Canada

Ireland are turning into the surprise packet of the World Cup. Firstly they gave warm favourites South Africa a huge scare and they have now comprehensively defeated Canada.

Led by Dave Langvord-Smith who claimed 4-41, Ireland dismissed the Canadians for just 115 in the 33rd over and then cruised to the total with only three wickets down.

The pleasing point from an Irish perspective was that all of the bowlers claimed at least one wicket in the innings, with off-spinner Kyle McCallan finishing the innings with figures of 2-0 off five balls.

Only opening batsman Geoff Barnett showed resistance with a fighting 27, before falling to Langford-Smith.

In reply Ireland lost just three wickets and wrapped up the win in only the 27th over. Opener Jeremy Bray looked in fine touch finishing 41 not out.

Some good news for the Canadian camp was the bowling of young left-armer Umar Bhatti who bowled without luck and conceded only 14 runs from his seven overs.

Ireland must now feel extremely confident of causing an upset or two in when the World Cup group stages get under way early next week.
