Based on what i've read about him. He is rated very highly by John Arlott & Peter West (on the DVD Cricket the great bowlers). Buy it.

how good is this mark davies bloke? im not suprised the whole durham bowling unit are or have been in the squad, they have been storming the county championship for ages. whenever i see the durham scorecard so many of the batsmen read LBW Davies etc.
i personally would go with the highly reliable Graham onions to start the first test. on a slower SA pitches does anyone think he'll get battered about? would anyone go with liam plunkett instead with his extra aggression might be useful in SA?
im excited and looking forward to this series. i feel our team is slightly weak especially in the bowling department and will lose in SA but i hope im wrong

Two possible reasons off the top of my head would be lower FC bowling averages during that time and the county that each played for. Derby and Glamorgan were not fashionable and selectors generally did not look in their direction.

Am very sceptical about Luke Wright appearing in an England Test team. I personally have reservations about both his batting and bowling at Test level, yes it adds balance to the side in that he gives us a decent fifth option with the ball rather than the bits and pieces that Collingwoodm, Trott and KP would have to throw down. And I would prefer Wright at number 7 than I would Broad, but that does not make it a decent option for me.

I'm not at all convinced that Wright would be a better Test bowling option than Collingwood. Even if he would be, it'd be pretty marginal - certainly not enough to pick him ahead of an actual batsman.

He is more of a wicket-taking option than Collingwood. Colly can generally be relied upon to get through a fwe overs with limited damage, Wright I would expect to be more expensive but that generally is because he is a more attacking bowler. I agree that I don't think it's good enough for him to be picked above a specialist batsman.

I'm really not convinced at all TBH. It's not like it's been the case in First Class cricket, and while I do agree that Wright's bowling style is more likely to translate from FC cricket to Test cricket without much change in effectiveness than Collingwood's, there's really nothing in it IMO. Collingwood's bowling is a bit under-rated for mine.

Yeah, I know he had a good season. Tim Bresnan averaged 48 in 2007 though, for example - it doesn't really mean a lot to me unless you can back it up for longer than one season. He certainly shouldn't be pushing for selection based on his batting alone and his bowling isn't big enough of a factor to be picked as an allrounder while Collingwood's already batting five, IMO.Averaged 52 in the Championship last season, not bad for someone who isn't an 'actual batsman'

I'm not convinced myself, I'm not defending any suggestion that Wright should be in the Test XI, and don't necessarily believe him to be a better bowler than Collingwood, but certainly a different style of bowler and it would depend what type of bowler they want for the fifth option.

As long as the batsman who misses out is Bell and not Trott (sounds obvious, but consistency and logic are obviously relative strangers to Dusty et al) I wouldn't have a huge problem with Wright playing. Selection looks a tad bits-and-piecesy, but it's not like he's keeping out a huge line of test quality batsmen.
