Nick Name XI

G.I.Joe

International Coach
,
1. Epithet is a synonym of nickname.
2. Mr Cricket and The Wall are both nicknames or epithets however you like to call it.
3. Who died and made you the judge of what counts?
4. The Master Blaster will always be Sir Viv.
5. Some of yours aren't even nicknames anyway? Ishant?! Sachin?! Laxman???!!!!
1. I highly doubt Dravid is referred to as 'The Wall' instead of 'jammy' by his mates. There clearly exists a subtle difference between a nick-name and an epithet, there's a reason they exist as different terms.
2. Yes, 'The Wall' is clearly an epithet. You're welcome to take a call on the other.
3. Albus Dumbledore.
4. Nah. It isn't a copyrighted trademark. Why so stuffy?
5. Yeah, they're not nick-names.........................…<,n

Talking of nicknames, there was a T20 international between India & Australia in 2008 where the Aussie cricketers had their nicknames written at the back instead of their usual names:huh:

International Vice-Captain
A random Pakistan XI featuring relatively recent players.

Professor
Toffee Kumar
MoYo
Aaloo
Grandpa Tuk Tuk
Boom Boom
Dropmal
IDone
Princess
Guldozer
Druggie

Wanted to put Younis in there but couldn't think of his nickname. Does anyone know if Younis has one? Grandpa is Misbah, IDone is Ajmal (kept saying IDone in his interviews so the name stuck) and princess is Wahab because that's what David Dyer (ex Pak Fitness guy) calls him.

Cricketer Of The Year
Marginally OT but some of the more original nicknames I have heard are

Morne "All Hands" Zondecki
Tim "Dial M" Murtagh
Ed "Ulysses" Joyce
Naved "Barry" Arif

And although this chap is a footballer as opposed to a cricketer, the sheer brilliance of his nickname earns him a wildcard entry:

"One Size" Fitz Hall

'Barry' Young would have to get a run for NZ. Real name Bryan, but tells so many lies no one believes him..so it's Barry instead.

Still think Phil "Howmuchisapacketa" Sigsworth is right up there.
