what about the 3 Ws and sobers, assuming they ever played together?
Spot on. They sure did play together lots of matches.

That would be a very strong contender indeed.

Kanhai and Rowe also played with those 4 in some match?

In a battle of four batsman as listed ,i would go for the Indian lineup here as the 4th batsman is stronger than in the other 2 listed.

Tbh I can't comment on the Windies team, but out of the other two, whilst I feel man for man India's 4 is stronger than the Oz 4, I think as a unit the Oz 4 worked better together than the Indian 4

I got into cricket too late to have seen the Windies bat.

I guess it could be them, or even the Windies of the 60/70s

Would it be off to suggest that Jaya, Sanga, Samaraweera +Dilshan/Jayasuria coudl be in that list too?

If we are assuming all four at the top of their game, I would go for Australia (just) over India. However I don't think either side has ever had all four in top form at the same time if I'm not mistaken?

really???? u think laxman is better than gilchrist and lloyd?????
He is better than Gilchrist and Haynes for me. Lloyd is a tough one.

Waugh is rated higher than his average for scoring tough if not big runs, Laxman is the same.

If it's just four I'll take the Aussies. The best complete batting lineup I've seen was either the aforementioned Australia side from '05-'07 or India's home series against Australia when Gambhir, Ganguly and Dhoni rounded off the top seven.

Laxman is someone who I think a lot of people feel could have achieved a lot more. Sort of an opposite of Waugh in that respect who squeezed out every bloody drop from his ability.

Laxman's playing better than he ever has though. He could yet do himself justice.

As it stands, he's probably the slightly-weak link that gives the four Aussies the edge.

Went for the Widies. Although I did not see them I would choose the English team of
1928-29:)
Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond and Jardine to chooes 4....sounds HUGE!
Sensational line-up that one, though personally I'd go with Hendren over Jardine for the strongest quartet.

A couple of other options:

South Africa 69/70 (Richards, Barlow, Pollock, Irvine - only four Tests together, and for Richards and Irvine it was the only four Tests they ever played :()

Australia 1934 (Woodfull, Ponsford, Bradman, McCabe - rivals the post-WWII line-up IMO)

Was my first thought, actually. Three nailed on members of England's AT XI with a toss up between Hendren, Jardine & Mead for the 4th best batsman in the team.

Would dispute that, weldone.

Hobbs=Hutton if you say so, but I personally rate Hutton higher. Sutcliffe>Compton is equally debatable, and Sutcliffe being an opener is all you've really got to go on in that regard. Jardine>Leyland is very shaky. As a cricketer, maybe, but as a batsman alone?
Pffft. Frenchmen.

Not Rowe - he came along years after the 3 W's had retired.

Maybe Kanhai very early in his career.

Probably the Aus line-up for me, especially if we go down to number 7.

But WI circa late 1970s - Richards at his peak, Lloyd still a force - were unbelievable too.

I think Kallicharan was another batsman who was pretty good at the time.
