I can't see either of the big 3 going to SA in November 2013, so there is plenty of time to ease them out.

So what exactly is India's upcoming schedule? Is it that they are playing solely at home, or have they a lot of games V SL etc?

They have Pakistan at home between the tri-series and IPL if they can agree on whatever their issues are (which seems unlikely)
Sr Lanka away in summer
New Zealand at home late summer before the Champions League
England at home November and December (with an exciting 7 match ODI series in January to look forward to)
Australia at home in February-March time next year

They have South Africa, New Zealand and England away between December 2013 and August 2014. There's a home series vs West Indies in there somewhere, off the top of my head I can't remember if it's before South Africa or after England.

edit: West Indies series is in winter 2014, the home series against Australia is Tests only, Australia go back for ODIs in November 2013 (yet another 7 match thriller.)

In his last 14 Test innings outside the subcontinent, VVS Laxman has scored 284 runs at 20.28, with a highest of 66. In 16 previous innings outside the subcontinent, Laxman had scored 704 runs at 54.15, with one century and six fifties.

Meanwhile, Virender Sehwag averages 21.09 in his last 21 innings outside the subcontinent, since India's last tour to Australia in 2007-08. Till that point, he'd averaged 42.62 in 40 innings outside the subcontinent.

Yeah they were poor, but there were real concerns beforehand we wouldn't bowl them out over there.

Well a smooth transition from the fab four to the new bats is probably not going to happen.

VVS, Gambhir, Sehwag will be first in line for axing. Rohit, Mukund, Vijay and Rahane likely first in line as their replacements. This is the ****tiest possible exit for Laxman, in this form in Australia, but it has to happen.

When Dravid and Tendulkar retire we have Raina, Pujara, Tiwary and some fringe options.

Would only swap Praveen for Ishant in the bowling.

Dhoni will stay cap'n and w/k.

So many noobs its dodgy. Can't get worse at least.

Tbf I wouldn't be keen on India playing five Tests in England right now anyway; they'd get towelled up and it'd become pointless.

Don't throw away the best players! Work them back into form. Similar concerns were expressed about Ponting and Hussey, and both blasted their way back into form. India need to have patience with their batting, and get them back in form sooner than later. Number six is a problem, and I feel it should be a bowler at that position unless the pitch is hideously bowler-friendly. Numbers seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven, even more so- except Dhoni, Ashwin and Vinay, all are bunnies or clowns. Plenty of domestic bowlers are capable of batting, and should be in the running.

Lock the revolving door, and weld it shut. Let there be a limited number of players- the current squad, and five outside. In the current bunch of pacers/seamers/swingers, Ishant, Umesh and Aaron are reasonably quick, and that should be optimised. Let's also get wicket-taking spinners, not mere passengers that keep Duncan Fletcher happy.

Dhoni should step down, for his own good. Let him catch up on his batting, which has suffered in Tests, and isn't giving India the advantage of the extra batsman and the room for a mandatory bowler or all-rounder. Gambhir should be captain, as he's willing to take it up, not bogged down by fitness concerns, and ideally shouldn't be dropped at all- Mukund and Vijay are still a far cry from Test standard.

Succession policy. Seriously. Why doesn't Australia need one for Ponting and Hussey? Or South Africa for Kallis, Smith and AB? Or Sri Lanka for Mahela, Dilshan and Sanga? Or England for Strauss, Trott and KP? If they actually start implementing succession policies, they'll struggle to win games. The India cap will also lose its value- like it has, with Kohli, Jadeja, Ojha and Munaf getting so many caps. Let every so-called promising youngster work hard for that India cap.
