Battle #14

(3)Gary Pratt running out Ricky Ponting at Trent Bridge
4th Test: England v Australia at Nottingham, Aug 25-28, 2005 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com
44.1 Flintoff to Martyn, RUN OUT! Martyn plays this to cover and runs, Ponting sets off for a single, he runs hard, Gary Pratt, the 12th man, throws the stumps down and Ponting is gone! 155/3

16.1 to Flintoff, McGrath gets another one bang on target, Flintoff can do nothing as the ball keeps low and crashes into the stumps! McGrath has five wickets and England are in deep, deep trouble. 21/5

McGrath was obviously a great performance, but Gary Pratt by some distance.

Mark Nicholas puts it perfectly: "That is a gigantic moment. Not just in the day or in the game, but maybe in the series." A gigantic moment in a gigantic series.

McGrath bowled well but it was basically a glorified warm-up. Might as well add Strauss's century from last week to the battle.

What a ****ing disgrace to have Pratt even in this competition. May as well post Afridi scraping the pitch or have match fixing in as great cricketing moments.

You lot should be ashamed of yourselves. Carried that idiot around every test match as a specialist fielder. **** the lot of you, we'll have Usain Bolt as designated runner for us this year and our blokes will just have a rest, as your disgraceful, cheating bowlers did in 05 when it suited them.

Hop off the field for a rest, to load up on some mints and to grab some coaching - completely contrary to the spirit of the game, but completely in keeping with the spirit of England. About the only spirit you've got too, the lot of you. Defies the meaning of a test match to just pop off the field for a spell. Man up and stay on while you cop a thrashing instead of heading off for some Duncan Fletcher love.

Disgraceful. Says so much about English cricket. That their great moment is a run out by a sub fielder who can't spell "bat" and who now probably cleans toilets for a living.

Not that there's anything wrong with cleaning toilets mind you, though they probably feel dirty after Pratt's been around.

So it's McGrath. Get you lot eh? Celebrating being nefarious at the expense of one of the great bowling spells of all time. **** I wish he hadn't trodden on that ball (no doubt another great moment in English cricket). You wouldn't have gotten within a bull's roar of winning the series.

Simon Jones was in hospital with a serious injury, missed the next match, and never played for England again ffs! ;)

Pratt would have been on anyway, they did it all series, and not just for injuries. More for a Pimms and a towel down. You reckon Pratt didn't spend more time on the field than Harmison? Probably why you won tbf.

Bowl four overs and need a rest, then come back on so ferret face at mid on could call you up for another spell.

Dire.

McGrath, amazing spell of bowling. Love how clueless Flintoff looks when he gets bowled.

Pratt working at a 7/11 now or something?
Haha I think that's what makes it so awesome! He was a club cricketer and now he's famous for helping his country win back the Ashes. It's a great story and it sort of typifies how many things went right for England in that series. Every English cricket fan will know who he is - he's probably the most popular 7/11 clerk in history.

I think Bell got an awesome ball in that spell. Flintoff being made to look clueless was partly because the ball kept low IIRC. Not that McGrath couldn't have done it anyway, but still.

Honestly, what a bowler he was. Off stump, good length, doing just enough, lots and lots and lots of times.

Subtle genius. But still genius.
