Appreciation Society for the Indian bowling attack apart from Zaheer

hang on

State Vice-Captain
sharma has impressed. if khan and he are fully fit and firing, the difference in the quality of the bowling lineups for the summer is reasonably(?) (apreciably? dramatically?significantly?....) reduced.

Given the total panic that ensued in the match thread when it arose Zaheer might be injured, it doesn't seem as though this society is all that prolific.

Does anyone have any theories on why we miraculously seem to get by even without Zaheer?

Mine is that Zaheer's the leader of the attack, and so expects the rest to bowl around him. This restricts the other quicks from fully expressing themselves, the unfortunate consequences of which are somewhat offset by Zaheer's performances. In the absence of Zaheer, the bowlers are free to do their thing and not worry about playing support cast to a senior bowler at the other end. The improved results they gain from such an approach are again offset by the absence of a significant contribution by Zaheer.

What does it mean to bowl 'around' somebody and to not 'express' yourself fully?

Bowlers feel like they need to build pressure at their end, so that Zaheer can attack. Concentrate on bowling back of a length, trying to dry runs up. When he's out, Sreesanth (for example) can bowl that half yard fuller to draw the batsman into the drive, and no-one cares as much if he does get hit for four, because they need him to be more attacking.
