Seven contenders for captaincy

West Indies Chairman of Selectors Joey Carew has named seven players as contenders to replace Shivnarine Chanderpaul as captain of the national team.

The seven named were Brian Lara, Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Denesh Ramdin, Wavell Hinds, Sylvester Joseph and Daren Ganga.

Lara, Gayle and Sarwan may be the most likely candidates, with Joseph, Hinds and Ganga not regular enough members of the side in recent times and Ramdin at the age of just 20 years old.

Lara has already held the captaincy twice, leading the side in 40 tests and 85 ODIs, and is probably the favourite to do so again for the short-term future. It hasn’t harmed his batting, with his average of over 59 in tests as captain being higher than his overall batting average.
