Gough out of ODI series

England’s Darren Gough has suffered a recurrence of a recent shin problem, meaning he has had to withdraw from the ODI series against Pakistan. He has been replaced for the remaining three games by Durham seamer Graham Onions, and early indications are that he could be out for up to six weeks.

If he makes an appearance, Onions will become the fourth Durham player this season to represent England, after Paul Collingwood and the injured duo of Liam Plunkett and Steve Harmison. Gough’s injury will come as a blow both to the player and to his side, but the tall, angular Onions will be looking to make an impression in an unsettled England lineup.

The third match of the five-match series takes place on Tuesday at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.
