Gilchrist questions 20/20 WC

Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist raised concerns today over the Twenty20 format and the Twenty20 World Cup scheduled for September in South Africa.

The wicketkeeper-batsman who top scored with 48 in Australia’s 77 run thrashing in Sydney last night, told the media that a Twenty20 World Cup would take away from the prestigious one-day World Cup

“It might be a case of less-is-more and perhaps the World Cup so soon and in a World cup year of 50-over cricket may be taking a bit of the shine away from it,” he said.

“I personally don’t think we need too much more Twenty20 cricket at international level and that’s why. I’m sure I’ll get in strife for this, but I do have question marks over a Twenty20 World Cup.”

His captain Ricky Ponting disagreed though, saying he was looking forward to the upcoming championships but stressed the format shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

“I enjoy playing the game but I think it’s best played when it is just a fun sort of game and there is not too much riding on it,” he said.

“We know that there’s a world championship coming up and I guess if we keep playing like that, then bring it on.”
