The performances of the top Indian players in the last two years should give a hint.

In the last two years, all of Sehwag, Sachin, Gambhir, Raina and Rohit Sharma have done better than overall, and are sure contenders. Dhoni has been impressive in the last two years, though not better than his overall career record. Kohli and Ashwin are impressive newcomers, and could be starting lineup regulars. Yusuf has had a great 2010, and in a limited capacity as a number seven and filler bowler, he's useful. He's a better bet with the ball than the part-timers. Ideall, they can keep out poor fielders like Munaf, Praveen and Nehra, which would cut the pace options a great deal, but a trio of Zaheer, Ishant and Sree isn't flimsy at all. The one to miss out, however, will be Yuvraj, who has struggled to get runs and wickets, especially as the new all-rounder of the team.

The presence of Chawla opens up another option. He's one of India's best OD spinners, and also a run-scoring option. He's had a largely patchy Ranji, but has struck form lately in this last game. In a limited batting capacity, he'll do well, and at the same time, make the most of spin-friendly Indian pitches. A combination of Chawla and Ashwin will surely be quite a handful, and aid the balance of the side greatly. Harbhajan, though, may be excluded, as he's not got too many wickets or runs, even though he's done just as well in these two years.

    Ideally-
    • Sehwag
    • [Sachin
    • Kohli
    • Dhoni (WK)
    • Raina
    • Gambhir
    • Yusuf (OB)
    • Ashwin (OB)
    • Zaheer (LFM)
    • Ishant (RFM)
    • Sreesanth (RFM)
They can stretch it by having Chawla and Vinay Kumar ahead of Yusuf and Sreesanth. All of them are good fielders, except two very average ones, though fielding is a subjective issue.

    Yuvraj
    Kohli
    Raina
    Dhoni
    Ashwin
    Praveen

If the pitches are turning then Harbhajan for Nehra.
Ashwin is not any better than Harby and Harb is obviously a better bat. Ashwin was pretty expensive in the NZ series IIRC. And would rather play 2 seamers instead of 3 tbh.

He took 11 wickets at 24 though over 5 matches though. You'd take that.

Don't think Harbhajan's clearly a better batsman than Ashwin at all tbh.

Don't want Ishant anywhere near the ODI side. Sree would also be a huge risk. Zaheer and Nehra should be the first choice opening attack.

I do not want to see Ishant in a first XI or Sreesanth in a WC squad.
The speed at which a fielding team gets through the innings is overrated.

Arjun, Gambhir @ No.5 is a total joke. If Gambhir cant bat in top 3 positions, he can sit out. Yuvraj surely will play ahead of Kohli.

Also I'd go with Zaheer, PK and Nehra instead of Zaheer, Ishant and Sree.

    Sachin Tendulkar
    Virender Sehwag
    Gautam Gambhir
    Yuvraj Singh
    MS Dhoni
    Suresh Raina / Virat Kohli
    Yusuf Pathan
    Ravi Ashwin
    Praveen Kumar
    Zaheer Khan
    Ashish Nehra

    11. Nehra

    13. R. Sharma
    14. Ashwin
    15. I. Sharma

Think that they may need to have an extra quick in the wings. I also think that they can afford to take Yusuf Pathan into the cup. When you look at it, you can see why they persevered with Ravindra Jadeja, as he brings a bit of variety (left arm spin) and seems like a good option at 7; unfortunately his batting wasn't good enough.

Was thinking about selecting a reserve keeper, but I can't see them resting Dhoni throughout the tournament. Although the fact that they've named three more in the squad indicates otherwise.

I think they'll need an extra bowling option of both types within the squad, toss-up between Sree and Instant Karma.

    Karthik
    Munaf

That's my squad. Would be very tempted to leave out Nehra but he's been good since his recall so it'd be harsh. I'd personally back Munaf to do a better job in a third seamer's role but Nehra deserves his place for now. I was very tempted to include Ojha for Ashwin too, but batting tipped it.

My biggest fear is Jadeja making it to the squad and eventually to the playing XI.

Harbhajan in the X1 would make me more worried tbh. I'd definitely play Ashwin ahead of him, much better LO bowler.
