Y no Afghanistan flag
Australia
1 Katich 2 Watson 3 Ponting 4 Khawaja 5 Clarke 6 Hussey 7 Haddin 8 Hauritz 9 Johnson 10 Siddle 11 Harris

So therefore my countries second XI is
1 Rogers 2 Hughes 3 Cosgrove 4 DHussey 5 White 6 Paine 7 McDonald 8 O'Keefe 9 McKay 10 Cameron 11 Bollinger.

So no room for Smith, Beer or Hilfenhaus despite being in the current 12. BTW I'm aware the injury status of Rogers, McDonald..

No Morgan?

Lyth
Carberry
Adams
Hildreth
Taylor
Morgan
Davies
Rashid
Bresnan
Onions
Finn

That is presuming of course that Tremlett, Anderson, Broad and Swann are fit to play in a test side.

Just to clarify, i don't rate Bopara and feel it is time Rashid was given a chance ahead of Monty. So my team is fitting the criteria PEWS goes for.

Well "England A" (which is more like what you've posted) would be a different side to England's second XI. The latter would include players in the squad but not in the first eleven as such - Finn, Bresnan, Morgan, Panesar etc.

I'd rather look at this way - if your first eleven was completely unavailable for whatever reason, who would you pick for a vital Test series? That poses different questions to 'A' teams as it includes current squad players outside the eleven but also puts more emphasis on the here and now, rather than being developmental.

For Australia (which isn't necessarily my team, but is by far the domestic system I know the most about), assuming the team that played the Melbourne Test plus Katich minus Hughes is the first eleven:

1. Phil Hughes
2. Chris Rogers
3. Usman Khawaja
4. David Hussey
5. Cameron White
6. Mark Cosgrove
7. Tim Paine
8. Steve O'Keefe
9. Stuart Clark
10. Mark Cameron
11. Doug Bollinger

Copeland stiff to miss out, but with so little experience in the team I think Stuart Clark would be a nice addition to the attack, and I think Cameron's more likely to be successful at Test level at this point. I also considered a North/McDonald combination over Cosgrove/O'Keefe, but I figured I'd back the better specialists in this case. I'd think about Krejza in the subcontinent, and I think about Chris Swan in England.

Hughes (hey I don't rate him, but he's the best we've got)
Rogers
Khawaja
D Hussey
White
McDonald
Paine
Hauritz/O'Keefe (reckon O'Keefe's the better player, but Hauritz has got more runs on the board)
Cameron
Copeland
Bollinger

Don't rate him that much in First Class Cricket as of yet.

It was more a personal view tbh.

The likes of Monty and Morgan would no doubt be picked over Rashid and Taylor by the selctors, but I personally would rather the latter two.

Okay, fair enough. What about Finn and Bresnan though? They aren't part of the first eleven so they should be considered for the second eleven. Unless you just don't rate them.

The opening options are ridiculous, Nicol, Redmond, Papps etc.etc. all could be rotated in there. I intentionally left out the likes of Styris/Tuffey/Mills.

Actually forgot all about Bresnan and despite Finn's good start I don't really rate him as highly as others.

Will get Bresnan in for Woakes.

Yovich/Woodcock at 6 wouldn't really be the greatest, they're both more like 7s.

Woodcock was the highest first class run scorer last season. Hopkins statistically would also be capable of playing at 6.

In reality? No.

Would you have Jeewan Mendis close to the first class team, possibly ahead of a seamer?

May be in the future but not for the WC, Jeewan needs some adjustments in his batting. If Mathews struggles with fitness, we may see him play in WC matches too. Then he's not a first line spinner. Somewhere between a front liner and a part timer. So the chances of him replacing a seamer is minute.

If the complete 1st XI were unavailable for the first Test against Sri Lanka later this year, my XI would look like this (providing their early season from is reasonable)

1. Lyth
2. Carberry
3. Key
4. Bopara
5. Hildreth
6. Morgan
7. Davies (WK)
8. Bresnan
9. Shahzad
10. Panesar
11. Finn

Would use Rob Key as a player with Test experience and also as my skipper. I'm not suggesting he would be a player I would necessarily turn to should one of England's actual first team pick up an injury, but as part of a complete team overhaul think he'd be pretty valuable on the basis his form improved from last season.

James Taylor and Andrew Gale both were considered, but wouldn't be in a rush to throw Taylor in, while Gale would be pushing all batsmen in the top six hard, as I'd have confidence in him batting anywhere.

Lyth just edges out Jimmy Adams aswell as Carberry's opener.

A middle order of Bopara, Hildreth, Morgan with Davies at seven looks pretty strong to me. With Bopara able to fill Collingwood's role with his part-time medium pace offerings should they be required.

The bowling attack is relatively straight forward for me. Onions would obviously come into contention should he return to full fitness, but on the basis this is a side for May time, he may not have had enough cricket by then to prove full fitness. Therefore Finn, Shahzad, and Bresnan give us the pace attack, with Panesar resisting the challenge from the likes of James Tredwell, Adil Rashid, etc.
