Stop me, oh-oh-oh stop me, stop me if you think that you've seen this thread before....

Not sure that I have though. So here goes. As an Englishman, this has been something of a golden age for Worst XIs, so I don't even need to go beyond the 80s and 90s.

1. John Stephenson
2. Darren Maddy
3. Usman Afzaal
4. Adam Hollioake
5. Aftab Habib
6. Chris Cowdrey (c)
7. Steve Rhodes (w)
8. Mark Ilott
9. Tony Pigott
10. Alan Igglesden
11. Richard Dawson

Sub: Monty Panesar

Manager: Fred Tate

Physio: Dr H Shipman

Harsh on Monty.

Ian Salisbury?

Darren Pattinson, if not the worst player, has to be the worst selection I've ever seen for England.

Monty, not as a bowler, but as a specialist sub.
Salisbury a strong contender. Sussex reject, btw.

Shahzaib Hassan never played a Test Match for us.Plus Imran Farhat is Bradman compared to the batsmen mentioned in this team.

Mark Ilott was a bloody good bowler. Wasn't good enough for England, but there's got to have been worse England selections - Paul Taylor - another inadequate left-armer of the same era, maybe?

Yes, I had forgotten Schofield. Or should I say blanked out the horror.

You could pick a full 4 man attack of rubbish spinners. Off the top of my head, I'm thinking Dawson, Salisbury, Schofield, Richard Illingworth.

But if pushed I'd sooner go for a good late 80s / early 90s 4 man seam attack. Jarvis, Pringle, Newport, Igglesden kinda thing.

Personally I think the most under-rated 4-man attack would be something like this: Munton, Martin, Mike Smith, Paul Taylor. All good bowlers who've become laughing stocks a little bit unfairly for my money.

Well there you go HDS, our posts crossed and Paul Taylor is on one side of the line or the other. You're probably right I suppose. Ilott was a good county bowler (and a serious player at club level I happen to know) but was pretty conclusively proved to be out of his depth as a Test player. I suppose there are others one could draft in though. Neil Mallender, Neil Williams, Joey Benjamin. Christ, we are well catered for in the crap Test bowler department aren't we?

Haha. Yeah. I was never a fan of Paul Taylor.

Probably the least out of their depth player in your team was Steve Rhodes. He had has moments. Would Warren Hegg be a better option. Great county option, but not good enough for England. Or maybe Richard Blakey? Gavin Hamilton or Rikki Clarke would have to be options for the all-rounder spot. One called up on the strength of performances for Scotland, and the other... Well...

Simon Brown, Mike Smith (great player, picked too late, so maybe doesn't deserve to be in the mix), Martin McCague. Tim Curtis or James Whittaker maybe at the top of the order?

So many options!!

Hamilton and Clarke are not-before-the-watershed selections. Again, I had forgotten all about them, and was all the happier for that. Hamilton in particular would stumble straight into the lower-middle order of this team.

Choosing the keeper was quite tricky because I never thought Rhodes was all that bad - nor Hegg. Maybe I should pick poor little Chris Read, great keeper and useful limited overs batsman though he may be, purely on the strength of his ducking that Chris Cairns slower ball.

Short answer - none of them would make it out of those who played in my lifetime. Maybe Doherty.

Read for his batting, I guess. But too good a keeper for this team, I suspect.

No-one has done an Aussie lineup yet??? I'll give it a go

1. Wally Edwards
2 Wayne Phillips (VIC)

8 Steve Smith
9 Cameron White
10.Dave Gilbert

Sticking to those who debuted since 1990.

1. Wayne Philips (Vic)
2. Phil Hughes
3. Martin Love
4. Stuart Law
5. Shaun Young
6. Graeme Manou
7. Phil Emery
8. Paul McIntyre
9. Brad Williams
10. Scott Muller
11. Simon Cook

For a worst XI you've got some pretty good quality players. The Hughes, Love and Law are all damn good, and the middle's only bad as its got 2 keepers in it. Bowling looks pretty dire though.

Criminal that you'd include Smith.

For Pakistan

Imran Farhat
Faisal Iqbal
Hasan Raza
Fazle Akbar
Kami Khatmal (wk)
Yasir Arafat
Naveed Anjum
Akram Raza (the guy who got arrested for illegal gambling)
Mohammad Sami (c)
Tahir Naqqash
Kabir Khan

Khatmal would do the best job by being wk and Sami's deputy. Making sure that Pakistan even manage to lose to Zimbabwe worst XI

Smith has no place in one of these teams. Cam White - for the role he was selected in - arguably does, though.
