Who would you pick? Three players to start a team

outbreak

First Class Debutant
If old players are allowed

i'd take

mcgrath
kallis
gilchrist

Some strong bowling, keeping and batting. Some filler around that core should make on ok side

a great batsman the opposition bowlers would lose sleep over: 1. bradman 2. richards
a matchwinning bowler the opposition batsman dont want to face: 1. marshall 2. murali
an allrounder who can swing the match anytime in my favor: 1. sobers 2. gilchrist

I guess I would choose bradman, marshall and sobers, if i could. if not, i would go for richards, murali and gilchrist

Let's say you were the coach of a new up and coming Test nation (Bangladesh for example), and you had a choice of picking and importing three current players from the beginning of their careers to start your team, and then building around them. Who would you pick?
Well there's no point taking Swann for Bangladesh.

Kallis, Kallis and Kallis would be ideal. But probably Steyn and Tendulkar. Would seriously consider Shane Watson too, though.

If old players are allowed you may as well take Bradman, tbh.

For mine, I reckon I'd take Steyn, Kallis and Sanga. Two bowlers, two batsmen and a keeper. Swann very close to getting in over Sanga though.

On the subcontinent, I'd take Steyn, Sehwag and Sanga, because I think Kallis's bowling and slip-catching would be slightly less valuable compared to Sehwag's sheer weight of runs and strike rate. Outside the subcontinent, I'd take Steyn, Kallis and Sanga, with Watson running Sanga very close

EDIT : It's interesting that many of us are making Sanga an automatic pick on the strength of his being the best keeper-batsman around, while he doesn't even keep in Tests anymore. I guess he'd have to do that in the hypothetical scenario.

using the same logic as in my earlier post, among current players i would go for sehwag, steyn and dhoni

I certainly wouldn't pick Dhoni or Sangakkara for a wicketkeeper's slot, I'd want my keeper to be an outstanding gloveman who'll cling on to any chances that my crap bowlers create.

How would you rate the current wicket-keepers in world cricket on their keeping abilities alone, out of interest?

Steyn, Kallis and Sanga.

If the side is Bangladesh, spinners aren't necessary and these three can lift them to amazing heights. Two world class batsmen, two strike bowlers, one of which is easily the best at the moment and a keeper if you really need one.

considering that this would be for a pakistani team..I would go with these players

Inzamum Ul HAQ
Sachin Tendulker
Brian Lara.

considering the reputation of pakistan cricket.. i am sure they can get afew young bowlers who could get the job done in bowling and be the next Wasim, Waqar or McGrath.. It is the batting that I will be worried about..

A lot of the same players are coming up here.

Most people would take Steyn as the bowler, Kallis as the all rounder, then one of Sehwag/Murali/Warne/Sanga/Bradman etc.

I'll do it as if I was putting 3 people into the Zimbabwe team - a team that may return to the test fold within the year.

Steyn would be in because they would need the best fast bowler in the world that they could get.

Kallis would be in because an all rounder in the Zim team would be a handy addition - a good bowler and a very good batsman for the middle order.

Their keeper and spin department seem to be okay, so I'll give them a prolific opener.

Sehwag - You're moving to Zimbabwe.

If the team is Bangladesh,
then they already have a world class spinner..I would pick a great batsman and a Jacques Kallis (who is a category unto himself) and my favourite fast bowler in the world today

Sachin Tendulkar
Jacques Kallis
Mohammad Aamer

Sorry but I'm going to have to pick 6 players - I'm not really happy with leaving out batsmen or with only one pace bowler. So here goes:

  • Glenn McGrath: The pace the team needs; an ultra-destructive bowler at the top-order.
  • Mutthiah Muralitharan: Greatest bowler of all-time in terms of wickets and longevity.
  • Shane Warne: One of the greatest bowlers of all-time in terms of wickets and sheer destructiveness.
  • Wasim Akram: My other speedster; good control over line and length and huge swing in both directions both off the pitch or in the air, and has great variation.
  • Sachin Tendulkar: In a team where the bowlers will be able to defend anything but the smallest totals, Tendulkar will add 30-50 every innings to take Bangladesh to a draw in perhaps 3-5 out of 10 innings; in addition to that, his centuries every once in a while will bring them easy victory in that match thanks to the bowling.
  • Brian Lara: For all of the strength above it's still a poor team and wins will be hard to come by. Therefore, what the team needs is a player who can once in a while pay off hugely and score a double century which will win regardless of the team's other batsmen. Lara is the perfect man for that role.

This side might just be a world-beating side. If you allowed me to add 2 extra players, I guarantee I could make it beat just about any team in the world in a Test series (those 2 would have to be Ricky Ponting and Jacques Kallis); another two would be Waqar Younis and then Virender Sehwag. That's 10 out of 11 players (5 batsmen and 5 bowlers): the final player would probably be allowed to be an actual Bangladeshi.

So what you're saying is that your plan to improve the Bangladesh side is to replace it with an all stars XI? :p
