Who will make a big impact in 2006?

I really hope Simon Jones comes back as potent as he was pre-injury, because he's one of my favourite players. However, I don't see why people are just expecting him to come back and be at his best straight away. I think it will take a while before we see him resuming his campaign to "make reverse swing ***y again".

Regarding players to watch for in 2006, I really believe Bravo has attained a new level of maturity, especially with the bat. Hopefully he will do well. Ramdin is another to keep an eye on.

Ian Bell looks the stuff. If he continues to learn as he undoubtedly did over 2005, he will be a fine player for England for years to come. For South Africa, I'm backing Andre Nel to truly establish himself and press on as the talent that he is. A consistently potent Nel makes a fine South African bowling attack.

Australia - Damien Martyn to return, simply because he's one of the few Australian players I actually like. He'll steady a shaky Australian middle order, making me uberhappy at his progress.

Whatever it takes!!!
why would anyone laugh at you or at that suggestion is beyond me.

Sure, they may disagree but surely Sachin is not THAT bad that such a statement becomes a joke.

Well... you-know-who laughs at people lauding Sachin, because he thinks he is past his best, or at least has turned into a selfish choker.

Sudeep, If that was aimed at me..then let me tell you that I have not laughed @ people lauding Sachin. If you think that he is not past his best and going to have a season like 1998-99 then good for you and I hope you are proved right at the end of the year. That said I have as much right(and I have reasons) to believe that he is not going to be anywhere near 1998-99 season and way past his best(and I am not alone).

Well, you have been rather derogatory in the way you have criticized his failures. I know you have a problem with fans who on one good knock of his go all "God is back", but c'mon, you've jumped on every single dismissal of his in the last few months since he returned with "Choker chokes again".

As for whether or not he will return to the peak of his form, ummm, 2003 World Cup was a good example showing that he's still got it. It was said that he was on a decline then too. Maybe he's gotten more downhill since then, but the possibility that he can still produce the best isn't out of the window yet, not according to me.

As far as I am concerned, that matter is closed. I did apologize to forum members and SRT fans for those posts and I have moved on.

As I said, it's not derogatory to the fans, but to SRT. He's not going to check this forum, but still, you went overboard with your criticism. It's no use apologizing to the forum members who are SRT fans.

Afridi, shocking cheat that he is, is also on the rise.
100% agreed, I think he could be a real force quite soon (as an all-rounder, his bowling has also impressed me).

I think one of them could well take Hoggard's Test spot by the end of 2006.
I hope not. There's no need to change a winning formula (which admittedly did get derailed slightly in Pakistan, but IMO that was more to do with Jones being out and Gilo having a hip problem).

That being said, I agree that Anderson and Plunkett have both improved a lot lately.

Hoggard is a good honest solid contributor, but he's the weakest by some distance in the four of Flintoff, Harmison, Hoggard and Simon Jones. He always get the best conditions to bowl, if there's nothing in the pitch for him he hardly bowls. Compare this with Harmison and Flintoff who get bowled into the ground regardless (look at the last Test - Hoggard bowls 23 overs, Flintoff bowls 36 and Harmison 43 or when Lara scored his 400* - Hoggard 18 overs, Flintoff 35, Harmison 37).

Anderson has far more potential and if he was bowling like he did when he first came onto the international scene I'd have him ahead of Hoggard (unless we're playing on helpful NZ pitches). If Plunkett plays it allows England to play someone like Panesar and retain their normal balance in the lower order.

Why Panesar? Might as well play Jason Brown. He's got more experience, and both have pleasantly flattering stats due to playing for Northants...

Was purely an example... They could play Anderson or Hoggard instead of Giles as well, could only improve the bowling whoever plays.

Personally I'd have Plunkett, Simon Jones, Hoggard and Harmison at home anyway, even if they played tomorrow.

I personally think we'll learn more about Panesar this year. I have an inkling he may make the tour of India (Graveney has tipped him for a "breakthrough" this year, which caught my attention). I've also read that he's been working on his batting with Boof Lehmann this winter, so maybe Big Dunc's creed of multi-purposeness has rubbed off. He has a good few years on most of his serious rivals (I don't consider Loudon a serious option at this stage) &, whilst he does play at a ground normally considered to be conducive to spin, the same can be said of your average Indian track.

I think his best chance of playing is either of the injuries suffered by Ash or Jonah not allowing them to compete in the first test tho.

Less from left-field, but I also tip Salman Butt to have a big summer over here. Like the look of him an awful lot. If Pakistan can find someone to open with him their batting is starting to look quite ominous.

Anyone got any Sri Lankans or are they all growing old together without any replacements?

I can't see any other reason why Avishka Gunawardene is still around after eight years of being not very good.
