Ponting never faced any great bowlers from Kiwiland? Shane Bond was just as bout as good as any bowler that's ever played the game when he got on the park.
Aside from the extreme questionability of that statement, during the part of Bond's career where he was any good, Ponting never played against him. His only series where the two of them faced-off was Bond's debut in 2001/02, where he averaged 90-odd.

Haha, I hadn't voted yet, Archie. Probably wasn't going to, but for your sake I'll put in another vote for Chappell. ;)

Oooh, tough one. Possibly the two best Aust. batsmen after Bradman. I feel like I would have preferred to watch Chappell and really cannot judge considering I never saw the latter live. So for that reason, and the fact voting is always based on nostalgia for past players, I thought I'd even up the numbers and go Ponting.

Not having watched someone bat and being nostalgic for the past are two matters with precisely zero connection.

Whatever it takes!!!
And I don't know who said he doesn't get respect, I've consistently rated him as the second best Aussie batsman, above guys like Ponting, and often higher than guys like Tendulkar, from the very beginning. And most students of the game also probably have him right up there.

Again, that doesn't mean you're a good coach.
Tend to agree... (And I mean the verb, not Sachin  )

I apologise as it was poorly expressed

I simply could not believe that many members of the Indian team had apparently decided that Chappell had nothing worth listening to almost before he arrived

As for Chappell not being able to handle the cultural and political differences in India, I think it was more a case of:

a. he lost a power struggle with Ganguly; and

b. the media had to blame somebody for the 2007 WC disaster
It is also because he was not a good coach from the context of the Indian team. Most of his ideas were doomed to fail.. like a rotating #3... And his stint at SA was pretty poor too, IIRC.

changed my mind about this over the years.

It’s Ponting easily for me now. Pre-Smith he was the best Aus player since Bradman imo. His last few years were terrible by his standards but he always fronted, batted three until right at the end of his career and didn’t miss tours when it suited him. Chappell was awesome but Ponting’s body of work is immense when you look at it
