Oldest/youngest players to retire.

Wilfred Rhodes was even older than WG Grace when he played his last Test. Grace was 50, Rhodes 52. Not sure whether Rhodes ever actually announced a retirement, though, as Grace did ("it's all over, Jacker, I shan't play again").

Dunno a thing about youngest players to announce a retirement, but thanks, you've just given me an important idea. :p

Shaun Tait technically...

A couple Kolpax would also fall into that catergory. Ervine for example, but he wants to play for England or Australia. So he would fall into the Hick catergory if he plays for England or Australia.

Anthony Ireland quit/retired at 22, he is youngest I can think of.

Archie Jackson stopped playing Test pretty young at 21, though maybe technically not a retirement.

I've noticed several Kiwi players retire early- Geoff Allot retired at less than 30? His left-arm seam partner Shayne O' Connor retired at 29, and the youngest from there that I can remember, was Chris Drum, who retired at 24, because he thought he could earn more as a travel agent.

Wasn't O'Donnell's retirement due to cancer? Or did he play again after that?

And I'm sure Drum was older than 24, though obviously much younger than you'd expect. Drum retired after his best season (averaged less than 10 or summat) and went, IIRR, into business.

Not as bad. As HDS said at the time, there is some evidence Hookes was to some extent at fault for his death, terribly sad though it remains.

Ben Hollioake, on the other hand, had no responsibility whatsoever. It was just terrible misfortune.

I wasn't exactly keen on Heath making said gag, as you know, and there are one or two I'd expect nothing better of than the gag in this thread. But Geg, I'd really not have expected it. Thought he had more sensitivity than that.

I mean, it's not particularly hurtful any more. It's just abysmal taste.

I think we're being a bit precious here. NZT was obviously joking & Goughy posted this:

Archie Jackson stopped playing Test pretty young at 21, though maybe technically not a retirement.
without any adverse responses & it's in a similar vein.

Given no-one remembers Jackson, though, it's not quite so bad. I'd imagine just about everyone other than andmark remembers Ben Hollioake's terrible death.

Of course Geg was joking, meanwhile - what else would he have been doing? As I said, I've tried not to be too precious, all I've said has been "expect better from you", and no-one else has exactly gone OTT either. I'd expect Geg not to joke about horrible things like Ben Hollioake's death.
