Boxing coach Billy Graham on Ryder, "we love the kid" -

Ryder batting 4 or 5 makes sense anyway because he's a middle order batsman. The insistence on him batting in the top 3 in limited overs cricket is one of the reasons (aside from the obvious) that his record there doesn't come close to matching his talent (especially domestically), IMO. He may not to lightning between the wickets but - when he's batting well, anyway - he's one of the best in the country at manoeuvring good deliveries for ones and twos, and once he gets set he can really launch. It's the perfect blueprint for a 4-6 OD bat; he's too good to just be told to just hit boundaries at the top until he gets out.
Five years or so ago he admitted to Wgtn guys he found middle-order batting in limited overs games very difficult.

It's not sheer impatience that's the problem here (he's always been stupidly pegged as a boozehound who "only knows one way"). Jesse will in fact block and leave and play an innings at a 50-60 SR quite happily. However, the lack of a shrewd and calculating game sense is still a bit of an issue (another glaring example of it in Rangiora just four days ago, albeit in a four-dayer).

If they're going to bat him at 5 I'll be surprised if we don't see him outthought by opposing captains and some really awful dismissals in the 20's and 30's overs, interspersed with enough 'icing on the cake', 'rescue act' innings to keep him in the side.

Agree with the PEWS that would like to see Ryder given a spell in the ODI middle order. Caveat that his ability to find the gaps isn't much good if his physique disagrees with taking quick singles. But think it could work well. Also agree with DOG that top 3 should not have to give up their spots to make room for him.

Hopefully he has improved his match awareness since the comment from 5 years ago that Kippax mentioned. Want to see proactive working ball around and turning over the strike.

How bad is this England Womens team playing? Average running.
I've ended up watching the 2 previous games while waiting for the mens side and they've been a pretty decent standard, especially the batting, don't know about today mind haven't watched.

Women have gone off due to rain, which is good, watching that rubbish was painful.

Rain radar doesn't look too bad though it looks bloody black out towards town, not looking particularly good.

It's been raining consistently for the last half hour or so. It's pretty average weather. I doubt we will get a game or at least a full game.

Pissing down in the central city right now. Great draining ground or not, we'll be damn lucky to see any cricket tonight.

The covers are off.

Wow, Jesse has lost a LOT of weight. That's the thinnest I've ever seen him.
