***Official*** India in England 2014

I'd get Ganguly in as a freelancer to work with some of our(england) players for odi cricket. Need a bit of a different approach and he can give an indian perspective on how they play the spin bowlers and approach their innings in odi cricket- and how england could change some things around.

For all Vaughan is critical of the england setup he was just as bad if not worse as captain and odi player so someone like that isn't going to offer anything new in approach in a coaching sense. Most of the English coaches haven't really coached outside england and have a very englandcentric understanding of tactics and approach to odi cricket so aren't really going give anything different to the players.

As more and more of the english pitches begin to play similar to indian wickets with slow turn England players will need to change their approaches to games and it will be a slow transistion unless you get someone in from outside with more experience of the conditions.

Whether the tactics are right or wrong of the english team the skillset of the indian players is so much higher than the english players for odi cricket.

i didnt see the game as i was captaining our seconds today, but surely despite all the talk of "england cant play spin" cant be right as surely the wickets cant have been prepared to favour spin? i would have assumed the tracks would favour the quicks so i cant understand how England succumb to India's spinners?

Because they've decided the best way to prepare for the World Cup is to play in the exact opposite conditions they'd expect to face there.

Because England's players are generally useless at using their feet properly and manipulating spin to milk runs.

I honestly think James Anderson, footwork wise, is actually one of England's best against spin. Because Jimmeh's footwork tends to at least be decisive. Too many of England's batsmen get absolutely nowhere and bog themselves down.

Does England even take ODIs seriously? We're seeing them rest their frontline players to make way for a bunch of ODI specialists who are not good enough to make the side. Unsurprisingly, India have done well so far in the ODIs, unlike in Tests. Also unsurprisingly, they get caned and squashed when they're facing South Africa or New Zealand, who field their best teams for ODIs.
I'm trying to think who England have left out from their test side for the oneday series - Robson, Ballance, and Moeen? Broad's having surgery iirc. Not quite the picture you're painting. And, of course, there are plenty of folks currently saying we should go much further, especially in the batting, so they'll be criticised either way.

I've generally held the view that the best oneday sides are mostly made up of test players, whose quality allows them to adapt their game to the different format. There are exceptions of course, as we saw from Raina at Cardiff, but the best sides have usually just replaced their slowest batsman for someone faster at the top of the order and brought in an all rounder somewhere in the lower order.

Quite what England are doing at present is anyone's guess. I'm prepared to believe that we d take them seriously, but it's already been pointed out that our skills set is hopeless for this format.
We do occasionally find someone whose good at first in these games, but mediocrity usually kicks in sooner rather than later.

as we all know Bopara is a very good player of spin so cant see why he hasnt got a run out in this series..the point that baffles me howeveris why has the ECB produced wickets that assist their opponents?doh?

Btw, what are the options to replace, say, Root? Bopara aside.
James Taylor would be the obvious replacement. He's been on the fringe of the side for a couple of years now, and has been in good form this summer.

Some have called for Jason Roy to be in the side, although I don't know how consistent he's been in the domestic game. He's a spectacular hitter when he comes off.
