Mukund was not in competition with kohli or badrinath... he and vijay was the one fighting for the third openers choice and it was clear after 2 test who was going to take it.
Yeah, was just saying that the injury has given him a nice opportunity to play at Lord's before a lot of other batsmen who've been around the setup for a while. On the flip-side, he also knows that no matter how well he does, Sehwag walks straight back in as soon as he is fit.

If he does well, and Gambhir has a poor series, could he find a way in?

Unlikely IMO. Sehwag and Gambhir are a great pairing and deserve to be backed even if they have a bad series. Murali Vijay did well filling in for Gambhir last year and I was grumbling a bit after Gambhir came in and struggled for form in his first few matches, but overall they have shown more than enough class to be backed for a good amount of time.

things as it is after first test sehwag if he is fully fit and gambir will be opening for India even if mukund score a big hundred in the first test. as for he replacing any of the two in the series i would feel either will have to have a very poor run after the third match say with an avg may be less than 15-20 for him to get back his place

For India, imo, after the recently completed match and this...

1. Virender Sehwag
2. Gautam Gambhir
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. VVS Laxman
6. Suresh Raina
7. MS Dhoni
8. Harbhajan Singh
9. Praveen Kumar (Opening)
10. Zaheer Khan (Opening)
11. Ishant Sharma

I'm annoyed that Munaf could not string a performance in his opportunity. It means you cannot deny Praveen a spot in the team which I think will be risky but definitely worth it if he can remove Cook, Strauss or Trott consistently with the new ball. Shows batting in depth to have a number eight with 2 Test 100s, a number nine with 8 First Class 50s and a number ten with 3 Test 50s.

Seriously, Trott and Cook will play Kumar with no worries at all. I can see him troubling Strauss, but I'd fancy my chances of troubling him currently.

I was just going through the recent results of India and England on cricinfo, and I was a little surprised to find that India and England haven't lost a series in ages. England's last series loss was in West Indies (early 2009), after which they've played eight series. India's last series loss was in Sri Lanka (mid 2008), after which they've played eleven series. Unless the series ends in a draw (which it probably won't), one of the two impressive streaks will end soon!

Presuming Mukund scores does really well in the first test and Raina fails ,Sehwag won't be the worst option at number 6 for this series only.
Can take Swann on later on too and come in against the older ball.

Pretty long shot at the moment though.

Praveen is a new ball specialist. If he cannot trouble the top three, he'll have to be dropped sharpish.

I'd say he's most likely to trouble Cook of the three. Trott bats out of his crease to bowlers of Praveen's pace, and in any case he's much more vulnerable to a shorter length than Praveen can realistically bowl. Strauss leaves too well to really be troubled unless Praveen comes around the wicket.

Cook plays on the back foot all the time anyway so the lack of pace isn't a big problem, and Praveen's stock- the full ball going across the left-hander- is what's had Cook in trouble throughout his career. In Cook's current form it might not matter so much anyway. But the only bowler I've seen give him any trouble at all since last summer is Nuwan Kulasekara during the one-dayers. So if I had to pick one of the three for Kumar to bowl to, it'd have to be Cook. Then Strauss, then Trott.
