NZ U-19's in CWLand

Great work guys, really happy with the batting and we choked 'em with the ball. Keep it up - Dauth looking for 3 big scores in the carnival, and hopefully those who haven't put in a "starring" performance can have their time in game 3.

New Zealand U-19 vs Cricket Web U-19
at the CWBCC Stadium
3rd Youth ODI

Shan Jasotharan played for a maiden U-19 century, but it was overshadowed by Todd Astle's 169 not out, and New Zealand Under-19 claimed victory by 11 runs in the final YODI. Astle batted for just 146 balls and grew in stature in his time at the crease, receiving great support from Derek de Boorder in a partnership of 202 unbroken for the third wicket.

The Kiwis settled for 293/2, setting up a huge chase for the finale to a well-contested series.

Cricket Web struggled out of the blocks with Thompson and Dauth failing to time the ball with any regularity. When the middle order fell away, the score was 123/4 and the required run rate continued to climb.

Sensing a now or never opportunity, Alex Crampton played with some urgency alongside Jasotharan, then Ben Wilshere resumed his bighitting role down the order. Wilshere launched 3 sixes in his innings of 42 off 20 balls, but ran out of luck when he was taken on the extra cover fence attempting punish Tim Southee further.

With his dismissal, the challenge looked progressively more unlikely, more so when Wilson was called lbw a ball later. Jasotharan's long vigil only ended when the innings closed, but he was found wanting, having scored at less than a run-a-ball over the course of the defeat.

New Zealand Under-19 293/2 (50 overs)
Cricket Web Under-19 282/9 (50 overs)

New Zealand Under-19 won by 11 runs.
Man of the Match: TD Astle

You can't fault Jasotharan when he made a century, but it's a little disappointing that we couldn't get home in the end. Wilshere came in with 10.7 needed per over and got it down to 8.5, so you'd have to say if he'd stayed in a little longer it probably would have ended differently.

Well played to those two anyway, and also Crampton.

Gutted. Extremely welly played by Jaso and top stuff from Wilshire too, but I have to say that our bowlers just couldn't get into rhythm on this one. Still, can't take anything away from one Todd Astle - impressive display.

Let's see some strong improvements in the youth tests, guys, and come away with a couple of wins there.

This was in the name of realism, right. We have a CW U19 side that would probably win if not go close to winning the Dev League - and it's got beat by a bunch of Kiwi kids who got shown up by Nepal last month.

This suggests a) that NZ U19 would be very competitive in the Dev League and in turn b) in International cricket and therefore c) so would Nepal.

The NZ U19 stats are ridiculously high.

Might have more to do not so much with NZ U-19 stats being high, so much as CW U-19 stats not being increased by an appropriate amount given the different environment.

Damnit. I got out when it meant most. Sorry guys. :(

Excellent batting by Jasotharan though.

BTW, do these count as OD matches?

What of it? :@

Unfortunate for the boys, but a good effort nonetheless. I was backing Dauth for another score, great form for a while now.

Hey, people criticized Runako Morton on his recent ton for the same reasons.

In Dev League terms, the CW bowling attack isn't exactly earth-shattering in OD cricket. The batting wasn't really a let down in this series.

McNamara and Wilson bowled relatively tight again, well done.

Regardless of this series critics, well done all parties involved. Time to get into the youth tests.

Good efforts. Just didn't set the game up well enough in the end, too much needs to go right to chase that sort of total. Well done to Jaso.
