Having a play with the stats right now actually and in the last five years of his career he forged a damn good record.

Batting records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

He scored over half of his hundreds in his last 38 tests at 47. Prior to that he had four tons in 73 tests, which is dire.
He did have to face:

Warne
Muralitharan
Walsh
Akram
Pollock
Ambrose
Donald
Steyn
Ahktar

I don't personally rate him above Taylor as a batsman, but he'd average a decent amount more facing the bowlers around today.

Having a go at a second eleven because I'm bored.

Mark Richardson
John Wright
Andrew Jones
John F. Reid
Ross Taylor
Stephen Fleming (c)
Brendon McCullum
Bruce Taylor
Dick Motz
Frank Cameron
Richard Collinge

Also remember that Flemming was one of the greatest captains of all time, which a NZ team would need to punch above their weight, more so than the extra 5 runs a better batsmen would score.

Astle and Flemming with Jones unlucky to miss out

Pretty tough on Oram and Coney to both miss out (especially with a middle order of 3 no3s, and a no 5). Also if Parore is your no 2 keeper, who is no 1? (Wadsworth - best keeper, Smith - best allround, McCullum - best batsman and most acrobatic)

I was really torn over the choice between Coney and Astle. Both excellent middle order bats and useful medium pace bowlers. Went with Astle mainly just because I've seen a lot of him and greatly admired him as a player.

Oram not particularly close. Good player, but the holes in his technique got increasingly noticeable the longer he played. I think his test average was saved by the fact that injuries got to him before the world's bowlers fully worked him out. Therefore he has to compete for the allrounders spot, and Vettori takes that comfortably.

McCullum is 1, Parore 2 and Smith 3. All excellent keepers, with the batting splitting them apart.

Compiled this side in 2007:

1. B Sutcliffe
2. G Turner
3. A Jones
4. M Crowe
5. S Fleming*
6. C Cairns
7. B McCullum+
8. R Hadlee
9. D Vettori
10. S Bond
11. J Cowie

I stand by it.

Flametree

International 12th Man
Sutcliffe, Donnelly and JR Reid for the three slots on offer.

My second xi :

Richardson
Wright
Jones
Fleming
Taylor
McCullum *
Cairns C
Nash
Taylor B
Collinge
Boock

(I am simply unable to pick any cricket team without a spinner, so Vettori is taking up a slot in the first eleven... having said that, I'd be picking Bracewell, Wagner, Southee and Boult for Headingly....)

Disappointed at the lack of Richardson love for the opener's spot. I really don't like the idea of selecting guys like dempster and donnelly because they played jack all test matches. Not their fault, but we'll just never know how good they really were.
Yeah, players should be excluded because of circumstances out of their control. Dempster, Richards, Procter etc.

I'm not joking or exaggerating when I say the pre-injury Franklin would be a shot for the 2nd XI IMO.

Donnelly @ 3
Phlegm @ 5
Cairns @ 7

Would fill out with McCullum at 6 & Vettori at 8, personally.

Second XI
  1. Mark Richardson
  2. Bert Sutcliffe
  3. Andrew Jones
  4. Ross Taylor
  5. John R Reid
  6. Kane Williamson
  7. Adam Parore
  8. Bruce Taylor
  9. Dion Nash
  10. Tim Southee
  11. Richard Collinge

I rate KW waay too highly. But I can pick 4 frontline seamers and have him throw down some offies alongside Reid. Plus I reckon he's already a better batsman then McMillan or Astle, even if he hasn't shown it.

As you said already, tad harsh on Astle there. Williamson's had moments of brilliance but overall he's been pretty average at test level.
