Dhoni - Best ODI Batsman Of All Time ?

For me part of the reason you'd pick Gilchrist is because he came as a package. Now you don't need his keeping so much you can easily put a better batsman in up top.

Whatever it takes!!!
Think it was Marc who pointed how absolutely awesome Lara was as an ODI opener.. Why won't you want a top order of BCL, Sachin, Sir Viv? With Punter at 4 and Bevan and Dhoni rounding off the top 6...

Watson, Sachin, Lara, Viv, Hussey, Dhoni, Klusener

No. Dhoni have the gloves and let Watson or Jayasuriya open up. Proven 5th bowlers as well.
Even if it's not Gilly, certainly would not be those two, would agree with HB and go with Lara if not Gilly. Still not convinced with Dhoni's glove work though.

As much as I dislike Watson he is quite an option in an ODI considering I rate his bowling and he seems to be able to bat a lot better in ODIs than tests. In an ATG side he gives a lot of flexibity when you also have Dhoni in the middle order.

- Watson
- Tendulkar
- Viv
- Ponting
- Dhoni
- Lloyd
- Symonds/Afrdi
- Kapil
- Wasim
- Garner
- Murali

Why? There's a number of better options than Gilly opening so if he doesn't have the gloves then shouldn't be picked.
Sachin is fixed in one spot. So whom do you have apart from Gilly as a perfect foil? Left-right, aggressor etc..along with giving a better keeper option...When I think about it, only Jayasuriya comes close..
Tendulkar aside I'm not convinced there's been a better opener in ODIs.
Saeed Anwar is a better opener.

But I would still probably have Gilly since he's a much better keeper than Dhoni.

yep, Saeed Anwar was a better opener than both, Gilly and Jayauriya.

However Jayasuriya brings a good 5th bowling option that Anwar doesn't bring and we don't really need another keeper while Dhoni is in the side.

Dhoni is not a bad wk choice for ODIs

i think i would love to have gilly and dhoni at 2 and 6. either one could take the gloves, though gilly was obviously superior in that department. the point is i think purely as batsmen they deserve to be in the team. gilly was equal to or marginally better than anwar, sehwag, m.waugh, jayasurya, smith, hayden etc. as an opener. similarly, even among the great late order batters like symonds, hussey, bevan, fairbrother, klusener etc from across the eras dhoni stands out. i will take them both in the team.

tendulkar
gilchrist (wk)
richards
ponting
symonds
dhoni
klusener
pollock
akram
murali
garner

I think there is a strong case or Anwar, Jayasuriya and Mark Waugh to be put ahead of Gilchrist in the ODI side. Do you rate him a better batsman on the basis of his SR?

On the ability to perform well in big matches..SR wise, Anwar and Jayasuriya also did well.. If Dhoni is there, I would personally go with Jayasuriya as he gives an excellent 5th bowler..and his left arm spin would also be a good variation to either murali or warne since I assume we will go in with 3 fast bowlers..

not as simple as that. i think gilchrist is the batsman the opposition bowlers would hate to see along with tendulkar when the field is up during the first powerplay. as the best cutter and hooker of the era, gilly would give electrifying starts more regularly than the other greats imo. he also knew how to up his game for bigger occasions. more consistent than jayasurya, more dangerous than anwar and junior, gilly is the perfect ODI opener to have.

If going for a specialist opener, I would take Greenidge and Hayden ahead of Gilly, Anwar, Jayasuriya etc. But overall I prefer Lara with Sachin up top. Dream combo.

If you want explosive power at the top then you can have Jayasuriya to open. If you want more consistency and more runs (from memory) all of Waugh, Anwar, Hayden, and Greenidge will give you that. Dhoni is the best wk option given that he is an ATG batsman and one of the greatest ODI bastmen ever. So I really don't see the need for Gilchrist given that he will also eat up a bowling option that Mark Waugh or Jayasuriya bring with them.

Good point, I had forgotten Greenidge and Hayden.

For Hayden though there is always a question mark in my mind especially against good quality opposition. Would prefer Mark Waugh ahead of him

i want more runs than jayasurya and i want more aggro than anwar and junior. gilly would always make it to my team as a batter alone. for him to be in the team, whether we have dhoni at six or not is irrelevant in my books.

Considering that Gilly would come up against high quality opposition in an AT team your books will run you into trouble while picking Gilly ahead of other teams who pick better batters
