Cricket team draft

A strange tendency from some to build the bowling line-up entirely of pacers was astonishing...specially when someone like Kumble was available (or am I missing something?)...

Edit: Ya, I missed it...so did Chaminda and Simon (being participants in the game)...Kumble was picked by Raghav in the 4th round itself...

Maybe everyone just decided Kumble wasn't good enough? I got Clarrie Grimmett second round so I had no use for another spinner.

Anil Kumble still available? That's incredible.

I nearly picked Azharuddin or Bland instead of Crowe, but I would have picked Kumble instead of Wardle if I'd known he was still available. I made the assumption that he'd already been picked!

EDIT: Kumble NOT available - 4th pick from Raghav.

I am astonished that you being a part of the game missed the point that I missed ... Kumble was selected by Raghav in the 4th round itself....Still, I mean there were still some quality spinners available...But some just built their attacks with 4 pace bowlers and that's it...Teams with Murali, O'Relly, Warne and Grimmett will be better off by choosing dusty spinning surfaces in the subcontinent as their home ground; at least they will have no threats from 1-2 teams in home matches...

Lol yeh should have realised, Raghav's team hasn't been of much imortance to me tbh. I actually just deleted my spinners list as soon as a I got Grimmett so wasnt taking any notice.

What about Inzi? Nearly took him rather than Hazare, but had visions of Chappell or Hammond being run out by him.

I looked at Inzi seriously but I knew he was poor against the very best attacks.

He averages 31 and 34 against Aus and SA, I doubt he'd make many against any of the attacks he'd be up against.

Hazare was someone I very nearly picked, also Azharuddin and Crowe.

There were heaps of quality middle order bats, I was very happy with Dravid, Tendulkar, Sobers. Ended up picking Gower, I thought he was quality and had to face some very tough bowling in his era.

BTW Gi Joe that picture puts my picture thing to shame, well done.

How about the underrated Jim Laker? I know where I'm playing, well atleast I know what country.

With four seamers, I doubt I will be playing in the sub continent. Also we don't have many batsmen from the sub continent. Hopefully all the guys with decent spinner do play on the sub continent as it guess us more chance to win matches away and also get the ground we want.

And re the pic, cheers guys for your compliments. I thought it would be tedious work, but it turned out to be rather enjoyable trying to pair off the faces with the bodies.

I was looking a Richardson and Hazare until I saw their record weren't great away from home.
Took a while to respond to this, but I feel the need to defend my man and point out that Hazare averaged exactly his career average in matches in Australia and a very respectable 41.45 in England. It was only on his one tour of the West Indies in 1953 that he performed significantly below his norm - this was to prove his final test series at the age of 38. So I think he was definitely someone who could play away from home.

Never said he was poor, just thought there was better options like O'Neil. Though it is one of those things from that era there is only ever a sample to rate them on. Also the difference between the players at the end was margin.

Overall I don't think there is a massive gap between say McCabe, Hazare, O'Neil and Laxman. Just personaly perference really.

Re: the greats who missed out, there are 4 all rounders I'd have thought obvious picks:

Vinoo Mankad
Chris Cairns
Heath Streak
Brian MacMillan

Brian MacMillan was the player I nearly took over Hazare - in the end I decided he wasn't quite good enough in either discipline to merit a place in the kind of competition these teams would provide.

Be an interesting exercise now for people to list their biggest regrets, in terms of
1) players they really thought would last til their next pick but didn't (realistically thought/hoped - ie. don't say Sobers when you didn't have a pick in the top 5),
2) players they completely forgot about but would have taken before someone eventually did, or
3) players who no one picked, but who they very nearly did.

And conversely maybe, the selection they were most pleased with in terms of it feeling like a smart or bargain pick.

For me
1) Andy Flower - I didn't think Gilchrist would last til my pick 11, and was briefly excited when he had slid as far as 10, but then I hoped I could pick Imran first, and O'Reilly second and still realistically hope keepers might not occur to people until another round or two (everyone was mad for pace bowlers at that point), snagging Flower in round 3. Would have allowed me to keep Imran at 7, but have five specialist bowlers without hurting my batting. Him lasting til only 4 picks before my third round selection shows this was nearly right.
2) Aubrey Faulkner. Would definitely have taken him as a genuine batting allrounder rather than Alan Knott with my 7th, or even maybe Neil Harvey with my 6th selection, but I had in my head that he played pre-WWI for some stupid reason. Was gutted when Goughy took him.
3) Seymour Nurse or Brian McMillan - was a 4 way toss up between Inzi, Hazare, and those two for the final pick. I very nearly took Jason Gillespie rather than Reid as well.

Selection I was happiest with was Reid - at that stage of the draft, I'd resigned myself to my third seamer having an average in the high 20s, and was really pleased when I thought of Reid, especially as a taller leftie he compliments my other bowlers so well.

Are we doing 24 hrs then skipped for the ground selection? Cause Michael7s is on now...

1) Dudley Nourse - I had him as one of my first picked middle order batsmen at the start of draft but when I got Lloyd I jumped him ahead. I was hopeful that people kept forgeting about him and he would come to me next pick. I think he went a couple picks later.
2) Aubrey Faulkner - I completely forgot about him at the start of draft, as for some reason I thought he would have played before the cut off. Would have got him after Kallis if I remember he played in the 20s. Though looking back he would have stuffed the balance of my side a bit.
3) VVS Laxman, until about a day before my last pick I had him penciled in as my last middle order batsmen. Once Evermind said his name I figured someone would take him so I had a look at other options. Once I had a closer look at Norm O'Neil record and his career and dropping, he jumped ahead.

Best selection Bedsar considering how late I got him.
