BEST day one innings - of a test match

robelinda

International Vice-Captain
Ok i'm sick of the BORING comparison threads, here's a fresh topic. Name your favourite or best innings you've seen on day one of a test match. Obviously there's heaps of tons on day one but a lot are just par for the course flat pitch tons, name some of the best ones that were actually a mighty effort due to pitch or match conditions.

My first nomination-

1997 Steve Waugh 3rd test Ashes Old Trafford

I always liked this one from Smith, just given his circumstances as a new (well apart from just having a couple of tests vs Bangladesh) inexperienced captain with only ten tests to his name coming out and make such an emphatic mark on the series.

I'd also nominate Sehwag's debut test ton, and his Day 1 ton in England on a seaming wicket.

Some total ROAD innings mentioned so far.....

Michael Slater's 152 at Lords. Set the tone from the word go, brillant innings.

EDIT: It was a road when Australia batted :p

In the NZ vs England test match in 2002 when Astle made 222, and Thorpe made 200* in England's second innings, Nasser Hussain made a brilliant ton in the first innings which I guess got ignored given what happened later in the match. Essentially, the wicket was as green as the outfield and England were 0/2 when he came in. No other player in the first innings for either side passed 50 such was the difficulty of run-scoring due to the nature of the pitch at that stage of the match.

Oh yeah CLASSIC innings that one, Hussain would be annoyed it is forgotten, conditions were mighty tough on Day one. THAT is the type of innings i was thinking about when i started this thread, rather than say Sehwag's 195- flat pitch, flat bowlers, was great to watch though I'll admit.

One which is largely forgotten too is Richie Richardson 100 vs Australia, 4th test day one 1995, GREAT knock.

Vaughan 2005 Manchester. Loved watching him bat and seeing him smash the Aussies all over Old Trafford was a joy to watch.

Xuhaib

International Coach
Azhar mahmood 132 vs Pollock, Donald and Fanie on a green top rate this as the best ever test innings by a Pakistani after Hanif 337.
