Australian Cricket - New TV rights negotiations/deal

Gnske

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Channel 9 just announced they've secured the TV rights for the Australian Open Tennis at all other tennis in Australia.

Looks very likely now that cricket will be departing Ch 9 after 40 years.
Anyone know what the most painful form of suicide is? I feel like giving it a whirl all of a sudden.

First the Nidahas Trophy ends, then Paine becomes skipper, and now this

This must be an awful few weeks for you
One of these things is not like the others.

But seriously how am I going to complain all summer about commentary if theres nothing to complain about? I don't give a **** about the cricket

CA are so out of touch and so money hungry that they'll probably sell the rights to Optus

Cricket, Lovely Cricket
Major financial crisis looms for Australian cricket. This is bad. BCCI can become more powerful given this. **** man.

Sources close to free-to-air television networks have been frustrated with Cricket Australia’s negotiation style, saying the broadcasters are treated as enemies rather than as future broadcasting partners.

Test and ODI Cricket vs England is protected. ODI series against England have to be shown on FTA as does the Ashes

Looks like Foxtel are making a major play for the TV rights.

Not surprised by this at all; Foxtel's lifeblood is sports and in the summer months, the loss of the Big Bash five years ago really hurt them, especially as the lost the Australian Open tennis as well and the A-League soccer has stagnated badly in recent seasons.

The anti-siphoning laws obviously will hinder them to some aspect but I could easily see a channel like 10 (which desperately needs to retain BBL at least) being happy to be a simulcast broadcaster for a reduced price.

So hypothetically if the ECB and Cricket Australia decided to take the Ashes to the USA for a series, there's no obligation for that to be on FTA?
Yeah pretty much. It gets updated all the time though; they made some changes to it just in relation to the Aus/NZ being co-hosts of the World Cup for example. If there was an Ashes series somewhere new they'd probably just change it again.

Test and ODI Cricket vs England is protected.
Only if it's in the UK (or Australia obviously), which was the point he was getting at. A theoretical Australia v England Test or ODI in the USA isn't protected at the moment.
