Can Ashwin beat Murali's 800?

800 wickets is extremely unlikely but Ashwin will have a shot at a nice all-round record like the first player to reach 500 wickets and 4000 runs.

Broad will probably need another 50 odd tests to get the runs. He is still only 30 but I suspect in another 2-3 years his fitness/form will decline and he may not remain an automatic selection particularly if England's fast-bowling bench remains strong.

Assuming he maintains his current trajectory, Ashwin will need around 10 more tests than Broad to reach 500/4000 and India does play fewer tests than England. However I see a significant possibility of Ashwin improving his run-scoring and I see fewer problems with fitness and selection for him over the next 6-7 years.

It should be close but I think Ashwin is marginally more likely to get it.

So Ashwin has 247 wickets in 43 matches and is all set to claim the record for fastest to 250 wickets which is held by Lillee currently (250 wickets in 48 games).

Ashwin will easily take 500 wickets

still think there's no chance he reaches Murali. Murali had broken his country's all time wicket taking record by the time he was like 23. Ashwin debuted at 25

Dude was their only decent bowling option for ages and started as a kid, he just had everything fall into place to hit 800 wickets, Ashwin is too old

But yeah, Ashwin will take 500 wickets and maybe even get 5000 runs and be known as an awesome AR

He only needs 53 wickets within 12 matches (4.4 wpm) to beat Lillee's fastest to 300 record and should do it quite easily since he averages 5.7wpm (even higher in the past couple years).

Will be interesting to see if he starts beating Murali records starting from 350 onwards - Murali has the fastest record at each 50 wicket interval from 350 all the way to 800.

Needs 4.7 wpm to beat Murali's 350.
Needs 5.3 wpm to beat Murali's 400.
Needs 5.6 wpm to beat Murali's 450.
Needs 5.9 wpm to beat Murali's 500.

All likely to happen considering his current 5.7 wpm (increasing) rate..

Never thought those Murali records would be broken so soon.
