Interesting discussion about the various sports in Australia.

My take on it is that cricket has always been the "national" sport because it's played all over the country, whereas each of the various football codes is regional to a lesser or greater extent (although AFL seems to be threatening to become the national winter sport).

thats what im saying. maybe im misreading your post, but your first para says association football is our 2nd or 3rd sport and next you say in comparison to roundball which is treated with condescension? also check your vm's i need your dreamteam tears pls,
I said benign condescension; meaning that pleasant but faintly patronising "pat on the head" attitude one has towards something or somone smaller than one's self or one's passion.

I've always referred to Cambridge United as my little "pat on the head" team; I wish them well and often attend their fixtures, but I don't feel for them and suffer for their ineptitude quite how I do with The Arsenal.

EDIT: Oh, & WAC. :p

Both football codes are played all over the country, in some parts Rugby is the number one sport, in most parts AFL is the number one sport. Cricket like both football codes is played in all parts but is not number one anywhere.

CWB, you have used a large number of words and remarkably self-righteous, condescending and overwrought rhetoric to say something that is completely useless, unoriginal and lacking any intellectual merit. Not to mention the quasi-racist, colonial-era tones of cultural superiority and a remarkable lack of any form of relativism whatsoever. Boas would be turning in his grave.

It's also more to do with the fact that for the overwhelming majority of followers, cricket = the national side, as opposed to a state/provincial side or club.

Australia has a culture of the beach, the bush, beer and rock/roll among other things, just because some of CWBs Australian expats find it uninteresting doesn't mean it ceases to exist. AFL I would argue is also ingrained into our culture, which is of course unique to Australia.

But hey there must be more than a grain of truth to CWB's comments or else no one would reply to him...

Slightly OT:
Australian culture had been symbolised to me by Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, Crocodile Dundee and Jason Donovan before I discovered cricket.

Ah yes, a guy born during the last throes of colonialism whining about the culture of other countries - I bet he complains about current British society because silver spooners can't trample on the backs of the rest of society as easily. It's such a Kipling-esque statement that I was half expecting to hear about the Sun never setting on the Empire to complete his self delusion. It's gone dude. Get over it. You're no longer Malcolm Marshall, you're Kemar Roach. Which, once you accept it, isn't a horrible thing to be. But you still have to deal with it.

Hi Dan. I'm trying to message you but only succeeded in messaging myself. Can you or anyone give me a crash course in sending messages to a specific person on the forum?

CWB's mistake is thinking the statements touched a nerve because of something about Australia's culture, rather than due to Britain's history.
