The importance of IPL....

Dhoni missing that test series had more to do with the fact that he chose to play the all the so many ODI series that were happening at the time as he was the captain than the IPL.
And he was apparently named test captain later on based on those ODI'S.

In any case he was contracted with the IPL so if he chose to miss it ,would have been a really big loss for him for 3 years .
Plus he would not know 2 series in advance that he would be tired for a test series months down the road who his coach would recommend him not to play in.

IPL played a role in it, but don't think it was directly responsible for that or even the major factor.
Plus specially for Indian players ,i think the IPL takes a way lesser toll in terms of fatigue than a test series or a long ODI series.

Possible that it would be to cover possible compensatory costs if they cannot play for the teams that they are contracted to annually. So if Kevin Pietersen (or whoever) gets injured playing in the IPL and cannot play matches for India, it's a case of the board being compensated for it.

There are also rules about match payments for players when they are injured whilst playing (in Aus, if you get injured whilst playing a game, you continue to received match payments for the games that you miss, i.e. if Michael Clarke breaks a wrist in the first match of the Ashes, he still gets match payments for every Test and ODI till he comes back) and this might also be used to cover such payments.

EDIT: could also be seen as a form of "transfer fee" or loan?

On the contrary, the reason foreigners like Dale Steyn, Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen either have or had $1m+ contracts is largely because of their international performances. How foreign players go in international cricket will largely determine what IPL sides will pay them.

It's slightly different for Indian players, supply and demand means that top Indian players will always be able to command a premium in salary.
Yes, this is true, but the fear isn't so much that international cricket will die out or decline; it's that Test cricket specifically will. I believe David Warner had an overseas IPL contract before he'd played a First Class match (or around about the same time as his debut anyway). IPL teams will always scout from international competitions but that doesn't necessarily have to be Tests.

The situation we have at the moment - largely anyway - is that players develop their long-form games primarily and work on those core skills, then try to adapt them to limited overs cricket the best they can. I think we'll slowly but surely see a shift to the reverse of that whereby players focus on their T20 skills in order to make the big bucks and then try to adapt them to the longer form when they play Tests. This will have a profoundly negative effect on the quality, appreciation and importance of Test cricket IMO and that would disastrous from my perspective.

Of course, I wouldn't blame the players for doing that at all. It's their livelihood we're talking about here; it'd be disappointing from a selfish perspective but I wouldn't find the idea morally wrong. I'd blame the cricket boards, ICC and the overall administration of cricket for fostering an environment whereby T20 skills were of the highest value.

No, I am disputing the statement that "Dhoni - opted out of test cricket because of IPL". When he missed that test series, IPL was over almost 2 months ago and he had the time to rest but BCCI scheduled 2 stupid ODI series in between the IPL & SL tour.

I guess the only series that Dhoni could skip was the test series in SL. And playing 3 ODI series and a 3 test series in the peak summer in the subcontinent is just stupid.
I'll quote Cevno from India in West Indies

According to reports, apparently Sachin,Sehwag,Harbhajan,Nehra and Zaheer to be rested for the ODI series and Maybe Dhoni and Yuvraj too depending on how far their teams go in the IPL.

Selectors keeping a eye on the IPL for replacements.

Players may be rested for the test series too, as England is the priority
Yep. They need a rest for a tour to the West Indies but can happily play in the IPl for seven weeks

Is your disapproval of the 20/20 format or a once-year domestic tournament being accorded priority over an international bilateral ODI series, which occur 3-4 times or more a year?

If the former, fair enough - there are those of us who prefer it to a 50 over match, but reasonable people can disagree...

If the latter, not sure why rotating players in the squad is a bad idea - IPL or no IPL. Especially in things like ODI series - its a great opportunity to give chances to folks beyond the usual suspects. For the players, or fans, or cricket boards - what exactly is at stake in an ODI series besides the ICC ranking?

The chances of Indian players resting from IPL is remote. IPL is BCCI's brainchild and after selling the teams for 100s of millions I don't think they can force players to take time off from IPL. And no way are the franchises going to let them take rest.

The point still stands - India are most likely going to be resting key players for a tour, including tests, just after their own players have played in a 7 week tournament. And like I mentioned before, I dislike the IPL because I think national duties should always take priority

Didn't you say "There are too many meaningless ODI series" ? I am guessing the ODIs have suddenly become meaningful now ?

I am still looking for one example where India have rested a player from a Test series for IPL.

Collingwood missed the Bangladesh series last year but played IPL right before

The ECB rested him, so it's not an exact scenario to answer your question, just felt it relevant, like the Dhoni example

How many games did Collingwood play in the IPL ?

Yes I've said that. But Indian players are being 'rested', as they've filled what would otherwise be a rest period with a 7 week tournament meaning that Indian players are missing national representation

I could handle a few guys being rested for the ODI series. But I'd be livid if they did that in the Tests.

Kitply cup isn't national representation. Neither is mum and pup cup. Kitply cup was planned after the IPL schedule. The time that was designated for rest was sold to Kitply.

It seems that every time a cricketer is rested, IPL is being used as the reason for that. Dhoni was rested in a recent series vs. NZ in November 2010. I am sure you would argue that Dhoni should have rested in April/May during the IPL 2010.

While I agree with the sentiments, If I buy an expensive ticket of an ODI match (my town will never be given a test match) , I would rather have Sachin and Dhoni play the ODI than the test match.

Fine with everyone being rested for ODI series. IPL & T20 >>>> ODI, especially meaningless bilateral ODIs.

Would not be happy if they were rested from Tests, but tbh, the biggest priority should be England. Need everyone completely rested for that.
