Sangakkara -- deserving of his average?

Dunno, "eclipsed" to me suggests sailing past without a backward glance; "surpassed" suggests walking past with a doff of the cap, sort of thing.

IOW, it seems a bit, not disrespectful as such, but unrecognising of Aravinda's genius.

Extremely idealistic attitude.
Well, people can argue about whether a player is better or worse than their average suggests, but the average itself doesn't take into account whether you're "deserving" or "underserving", it's simply what you average. Chris Martin may not be as good as his average of 2 suggests, but it's crazy to say he doesn't deserve an average of 2. .

Perhaps, then, the better way of putting is "is <insert player>'s average an accurate reflection of his ability?"

Sangakkara is all class and lovely batsman to watch. Probably the most inform batsman in the world at the moment. Loved watching him bat against Australia.
Would be very close to the most in form - though I reckon Messrs Cricket and Kallies would have something to say about that as well.

He's pure class though, no question - one of my favourite players in world cricket, as well as one of the very best.

Sanga is probably the best batsman in the world at the moment. Kallis is also playing really well but Sanga has played more often in pressure situations where the rest of the batting is crumbling. Of course he has benefitted from a couple of not out double hundreds against BD but the 192 in Australia showed that he was no minnow basher and he has carried on the same form against England.

He was awesome again today, even though he was given a helping hand by Ian Bell when he was on 98.
He has not looked in any trouble and is a classic example of a player cashing in while he is in good form.

Would be fascinated to get a first-chance average, Test-standard-side only average for him since his most recent deinstation as wicketkeeper, actually. Will obviously be lower than said I$C$C-average, but will (I presume) still be superlative.

Worth doing, methinks.

I'd still pick him ahead of either of them if I had the choice.

I think he'd be just about the most popular bloke in world cricket atm. Is they're anyone who doesn't like him?

Then do it, lad.

All while you're at it, do it for all the players that have ever played test cricket against non-standard test sides, along with their first-chance averages, as you call it, and write a thesis as explaining your theory on why those sides shouldn't be considered test standard.

On my desk by Friday morning please.
