Sangakkara -- deserving of his average?

Then do it, lad.

All while you're at it, do it for all the players that have ever played test cricket against non-standard test sides, along with their first-chance averages, as you call it, and write a thesis as explaining your theory on why those sides shouldn't be considered test standard.

On my desk by Friday morning please.

Should be in by Thursday morning imo

So, Kumar's the first guy to score 150+ in four consecutive Tests? Early days yet, but I wonder if he can get to the level of Tendulkar or Gavaskar.

I don't need a thesis, it's pretty standard-fare amongst most cricket-watchers TBH.

It's fairly easy to deduct non-Test-standard sides, too - New Zealand before 1960\61, Bangladesh always, and Zimbabwe since April 2003. Plus South Africa in the 19th-century, but the 19th-century has always been a different question for me.

So, Gilchrist and Ponting's centuries against Bangladesh last year don't count then?

I think they would be a bit peeved about that.

They count, because they're games of cricket, but Bangladesh are not Test-standard, so they should not be classified as Test-matches. If those matches should be Tests, so should Australia v Hampshire in 2001.

Well, not quite really. He's actually faced far more turning conditions of late than most.

Even so, there are a million what-ifs hanging over his career.

Nope. Sangakkara is only good at batting rubbish attacks on flat pitches.

So scoring 100 against Bond, Franklin, Martin/Mills, Vettori and Oram on a typical NZ wicket was a rubbish attack on a road was it? I think he scored 100 in each innings too.

EDIT: I get the feeling you were kidding but I'm not sure....

Definitey he deserves his average. Why would u think otherwise ?
Because it has been 'inflated' by big scores against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, both teams that Sri Lanka play on regular occassions.

If we're talking purely about Sangakkara's average as a batsmen only, then he's either on the road to greatness, or just in great form. As it stands at the moment, he has played 16 Tests as a batsmen against Test-class opposition, and averages 81.07. Very impressive, and he has shown that he can handle all sorts of conditions. His 192 against Australia was a masterful knock, unfortunately cut short due to poor umpiring, and proved that he can make runs against the best side in the world. Was basically the only batsmen who kept Sri Lanka in the game with his 92 and 152 against England (contributions from Jayasuriya and Jayawardene) while his 100* and 156* in consecutive Tests against New Zealand, played on seaming wickets with a full strength bowling line-up showed his class. Great batsmen, and so beautiful to watch.
