12th man Bracewell/Milne

I know it's a big call to leave Bracewell out, but he really hasn't produced much since Hobart and Gillespie if fit is a genuine wicket-taker. It does lengthen our tail somewhat, but then again when was the last time Bracewell scored test runs?

McClenaghan has shown enough in the short-form to suggest he's worth trying. A solid lad who hits the wicket hard and gets swing and seam.

I genuinely believe that bowling attack is our best chance of taking 20 wickets. Vettori to restrict at one end and all out attack from attacking seamers at the other.

Milne is the other consideration, but happy to settle for the above for now.
Is Gillespie in form?

Lol, did you only just edit that to make that point?
I've been thinking of developing a more edgy sister channel ftr, Witness the ****ness. The black swan to Plunket Promise.

Does a hard core ND fan like Howsie rate Devcich?
Here's his opinion on Devcich's role in the ND limited overs team:

Devcich just isn't that good. Plenty of ability just an average technique. Shouldn't be batting any higher than six but can see him scoring runs on a flat deck later on in the season.
So yeah, fair to say he doesn't think too highly of him as an international prospect. :p

However, just a couple of weeks ago in the SA/NZ thread..

Well Devcich can field so at least he would add something to the team.....

Not too bad, seem bowling is a bit weak. Henry is bairly back for Canterbury yet, shows they like his talent which is good. But shouldnt play really. No Woodcock... Yusss
Two games, all 14 could play if they wanted to take it that way. (No idea on the TV situ, heard Smithy say he was "looking forward to getting up there").

I would imagine all 14 would play in the 2 games. I think they will want to see Neesham play both games with more bowling responsibility. I would imagine Broom and Devcich will split opening, while Butler and Wagner will also split, same with Bates and Henry.

I think Rutherford, Taylor, Munro, Ronchi, Neesham, Ellis and Beard are locks to play 2 games each. Latham could possible sit out for an extra bowler

Rutherford
Broom - Devcich

Taylor

Ronchi
Neesham
Ellis
Wagner - Butler
Beard
Bates - Henry

England name their test squad tomorrow.

Only 15 this time. Seems pretty simple. Looks like Bresnan is staying in.

Really sucks. Bowled awful for ages. Assuming they take the 5 seamers (Anderson, Broad, Finn, Onions, Bresnan) he is likely to be the second reserve and not play, surely he is better served going to have a full preseason with Yorkshire rather than trawling through the rest of the winter with England carrying the drinks. Woakes, Harris, Meaker or Toby Roland Jones would surely gain more on a first senior test tour than Bresnan wasting his time. This seems an opportune time to rest someone mentally who isn't going to play but who has toured a lot in the last few years.

I think England will add to the ODI squad too. It's meant to be just the one seamer but I;m guessing they're might be a couple of changes. Dernbach's form looks terminal but yet Woakes and Meaker still can't get past him - doesn't say much for their ODI bowling.

Personally I'd like to see one of the lions guys promoted from their tour of Australia. I'd probably plump for Chris Wright or James Harris and bring Chris Wood into the lions squad.

Kieswetter was in the initial squad but it seems pretty pointless sending him especially with Buttler and Bairstow already in the squad.

Root wasn't in the initial squad and is lions captain for the australia team which is going on at the same time but he showed more than most of the English batsmen and has already shown more than Ian Bell has shown in his whole ODI career.

Saying all this England are bound to continue their policy of continuity and not change anything.

Cannot seriously believe you're continuing to peddle this after all of Dernbach's failures. He's pretty much the worst ODI bowler ever.

Rikki Clarke has been added to the lions squad. Probably means Root added to the ODI squad.

England almost exactly followed my guidance.

Test
Woakes in for Bresnan. All else as expected

ODI
Harris in for Meaker and Dernbach
No Kieswetter
Root in

Lions
Clarke and Jamie Overton in.

Happy with those squads.

Yeah, all good news. Really need some fresh faces in the ODI squad, and Root has established himself as an England player this winter. Buttler looks like he'll finally get a run in his best form. Did nowt wrong with the gloves yesterday, and does look a natural 'keeper, not just makeshift.

Bres is no use to us whatsoever bowling at this pace, if they can sort it great, if not goodbye.

Not sure about woakes, but I guess on his domestic record he deserves this.

Oh and Rikki Clarke, does deserve recognition of a sort, I suppose.

If any foreign conditions are going to suit Woakes it'd surely be NZ's.

Still don't think he's got the equipment to trouble test batsmen on anything but the most helpful surfaces but, as with Morgan's elevation to the test side, he's earned the right to fail.

XI chooses itself, pretty much, doesn't it?

Harsh on Monty, but two specialist twirlers (especially with Root and Pieteresn in the side) looks excessive if conditions are as expected.
