Whatever they do it is going to get worse before it gets better as they will struggle without the big stars anyway while the new players adapt to test cricket.

Trouble is Kohli and Raina don't look up to it so there is big pressure on whoever else they pick.

What..? Teja's a knowledgeable guy, I just spew **** all over the forums.
At least your entertainment value = Teja's entertainment value. And some of your jokes are quite funny. Yes, that is a compliment.

Intellectually though, between you and Teja, it might be different story :p

I thought Kohli (& Lax, Sachin, Gambhir) batted decent but just couldn't convert their starts...
Dravid looked horrible again..
Sehwag lasted only 3 balls :@
Dhoni should retire from test cricket...

what are the other wicket keeper options for India in test cricket ???

Saha isn't worth as a batsman :(
How is Karthik's keeping these days ??
Robin Uthappa (is he gud enough keeper) ??

Once Kohli gets the first big score out of the way, he'll be fine IMO. His own head is what's holding him back atm

I still feel Raina can be good in the subbie - but then so can many other batsmen. Shouldn't be playing.

Sharma looks to have the goods, ditto Rahane and Pujara.

Dropping Dravid after a couple of bad games is insane, he was their only good player in England. Would sooner drop Tendulkar than Dravid.
I agree, RD have had awesome last year as well. Sachin has failed to score a simple ton for nearly a year now. DROP HIM!

Saw Rahane play in a couple of ODIs in England and thought he looked a real prospect

Rohit and Kohli obviously have talent as well so I dont think the batting will be that big a problem (at home at least!)

Ishant is a real worry as after 44 tests the guy still hasnt worked out the correct length to bowl and is absolutely gun barrel straight - cannot believe that he hasnt learnt a thing from Zak

Really?

Dravid's decline has been apparent for a while now(2 to 3 years) and he has gone through periods where he has looked clearly past it and slow/woeful. While Sachin was scoring big runs in the same period and even carrying the batting on occasions.

Even now when Sachin is having somewhat of a blip after the SA tour last year, he is still averaging about high 40's and not looking bad at all. Just keeps getting starts and even 50's. Think, to a degree that milestone and the pressure regarding it at home(and now away) is playing a part too.

Dravid has to be the first to go now for me, with India playing at home(or Srilanka) till end of 2013 after this.

Praveen should definitely be playing when he's fit though. Maybe not in Australia, but certainly everywhere else. If Yadav has to stay than Sharma has to go, really. Although I suppose it's a moot point as Zaheer isn't really fit all that often so they need three non-Zaheer seamers anyway.
Playing in SC till end of 2013, so 2 spinners will play in any case in most matches. So the seamers have 2 spots for which Zaheer, Praveen and Yadav should be the first 3 for. Ishant the 4th and Aaron should be in and around as well. They may try out some others as well.

Well Ashwin not playing was a one-off really. India won't go in spinner-less anywhere else in the world.
Yeah, read somewhere it was the first or 2nd time in history that India has gone without a specialsit spinner anywhere in the world.

What makes VVS even more vulnerable is that he's batting at 5, an easier slot to put a youngster into. We've seen how it hasn't helped Australia having to rotate youngsters/out of form batsmen through no. 3. Pushing Kohli up there is a tough ask, obviously can't be done on form. Maybe Pujara can go there straight away.

But if you're looking to get Rohit in there, then putting him at 5/6 is a lot easier and how a youngster should be introduced whenever possible. That's why the pressure will be applied to VVS even further.
Pujara can slot it at 3 at home atleast, or can try out Badrinath there. The worry with Pujara though is that he now has nuts and bolts in both his knees after Surgery. Been terribly unlucky so far in his career. :( Hopefully he gets back to his best soon.

VVS can play at 3 ofcourse too, if Dravid has to be the first to go.

With no overseas tours in nearly next 2 years, this is the ideal time to replace the old timers . Enough time for youngsters to phase in without fear of an embarassing defeat
