Fielding in today’s game has become a separate skill alongside batting and bowling. This wasn’t the case twenty years ago, it was just thought of as “something you did when you weren’t bowling or batting”. However nowadays, especially in one-day cricket, good fieldsmen have a distinct advantage over those less skilled. So if you want to move up grades, become a better athlete or simply improve your general cricket skills, having good catching and ground fielding skills will definitely help this process. In this section we will look at firstly the basic fielding positions and the associated terminology. I will then discuss techniques applicable for catching and ground fielding, complete with step-by-step photos, followed by various drills and exercises that you can do at your training sessions. My final thoughts will cover the mental attitude that you must have with you while in the field, as it can get tiring at 120-1!
