Ashes terror plot revealed

The Ashes series of last year, remembered fondly by cricket followers around the world as one of the finest in recent memory, could easily have been remembered for all the wrong reasons instead. A friend of one of the terrorists involved in the London bombings of July last year has revealed that players in the England and Australia teams were targets of a possible attack.

The plan reportedly involved a gas attack in the changing rooms at Edgbaston, the scene of arguably one of the finest test matches of all time last year.

It is frightening how close it was to becoming a reality and how close what was a perfect couple of months for all cricket enthusiasts was to being a complete nightmare. The only reason for the attack not going ahead is understood to be that there was a cricket fan among the group involved in the plot whose reluctance eventually led to the idea being scrapped.
