Rudolf Eric Koertzen
March 26, 1949, Knysna, Cape Province
Don't be fooled by the modern wraparound sunglasses, because South African umpire Rudi Koertzen takes his role as an international umpire very seriously.
"It's vital for umpires to keep concentrating throughout the six to seven hours out in the sun and for this one needs to be fit", he said. Much the same as the cricketers he umpires, Koertzen does this through regular sessions at the gym.
As a child Koertzen had a passion to play cricket, and when he looked like not fulfilling this ambition he decided to try umpiring. After joining the South African Railways as a clerk, he started moving up the umpiring ranks.
He made his umpiring Test and ODI debut in 1992.
