Whats the current record btw?

I reckon he will take not more then 8 tests. Ok so lets start the guessing game:cool:

Possibly. However, with years and years of Test cricket, surely someone has been there quicker. Plus, when batsmen work him out, he's fricked.

I don't buy this crap Mendis is not a one trick pony as some are making him out to be, I strongly believe he will be a success in the long term

Quickest since the turn of the 20th-century is Alf Valentine, Rod Hogg and Terry Alderman in 8 Tests. Highly unlikely anyone will manage to beat the 6 Tests Charles Turner managed, as wickets are now better for batting than they were in his day, without fail.

Tom Richardson, another 19th-century bowler, managed it in 7 Tests and "Demon" Fred Spofforth also managed it in 8.

Can he manage it in 7 or less? Who knows.

Wow Alderman in 8 I thought he was only good for the English summers.

Biggest myth. Alderman performed well in Australia against other teams around the time of his 1981 and 1989 Ashes phenomenons.

Well it took Charlie Turner six Test matches to reach 50 wickets, he is the fastest so far in history. Mendis currently has 23 Test victims and still another innings to bowl in this game, which is the third of his career. I reckon he has a decent crack at doing it.

It took Turner six Test matches to claim 50 wickets, not five.

SL having very little number of tests after this series. Wonder whther his purple patch will remain that long.

If he even gets close, it'll put paid to the idea that spinners are useless these days. The pitches have spun a bit but from what I've seen, they're not raging turners. He's just bowled that well.

he'll snare at least 3-4 in thr second innings. sri lanka play zim next, right? so 50 in 5 is concievable.

Sri Lanka's next four tests are scheduled to be against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, so given the opposition, I certainly wouldn't bet against him to bag a truckload of wickets in those series and get very close to the record.

Interesting comparison between Mendis, Turner & Tom Richardson so far

Test 1: Turner: 6-15 & 2-53 (8) vs Richardson 5-49 & 5-107 (10) vs Mendis: 4-72 & 4-60 (8)
Test 2: Turner: 5-41 & 4-52 (17) vs Richardson 5-181 & 1-27 (16) vs Mendis: 6-117 & 4-92 (18)
Test 3: Turner: 5-44 & 7-43 (29) vs Richardson 5-57 & 2-100 (23) vs Mendis: 5-56 & ? (23)

Test 4: Turner: 5-27 & 5-36 (39) vs Richardson 5-75 & 3-89 (31)
Test 5: Turner: 6-122 & DNB (45) vs Richardson 2-78 & DNB (33)
Test 6: Turner: 5-86 & DNB (50) vs Richardson 3-138 & 6-104 (42)
Test 7: Turner: 1-53 & 0-31(51) vs Richardson 6-39 & 5-134 (53)

So Mendis has a great shot at equaling the record of 6 tests or at least becoming equal 2nd fastest with Richardson on 7 Tests...

He'll stand a better chance if Murali picks up an injury and misses the next two

Good luck to him - I hope he achieves it in 5
