West Indies cricket discussion

How quick was Ambrose at his peak?

I know he got hostile bounce obviously due to his height, but he was never express was he? Holder doesn't need to be express, just needs an extra few k's and he'll be good.

At the very beginning of his career he was quite brisk but as his career progressed and his average improved it was when his pace was less and his other skills honed.

So I hear the proposed Pybus draft system (to make transfers between the teams less rare) has been struck down, despite it being approved the first time it was put to a vote.

T&T left with the tough choice of who to turn into a specialist bat; Pooran, or Ramdin.

Cozier was barking up the wrong tree apparently. WICB is now back in favour of it.

Cricketers to choose between jobs and cricket | The Trinidad Guardian Newspaper

Port of Spain, Trinidad - The T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) will retain 15 players in time for the regional First Class cricket series which gets underway in November.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) revealed recently that the First Class tournament will now take the franchise route, with players from across the region, allowed free movement to play with any team they wish.

Players will be paid a monthly salary, in addition to match fees for the tournament which takes place over ten rounds.

Chief executive officer of the T&TCB, Suruj Ragoonath told T&T Guardian yesterday that the local board would retain a total of 15 players and they would be under this programme for a year.

“Initially the board will retain 15 players for a period of one year and those currently retained by the WICB would not be retained by the local board,” Ragoonath said.

“We will retain a total of 15 players but not those that are already retained by the board. They will, however, be available for play for T&T. As an example, we will not retain players like Dwayne Bravo, Keiron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin and Sunil Narine but the others that are not retained by the regional board.

“These players who are retained by the WICB will get match fees based on their retainer condition with the WICB. The others will be paid a monthly salary by the TTCB for one year in the first instance. They will also get match fees in accordance with their retainers.”

The WICB will be subsidising the league and hence players will get a monthly salary in the range of US$1,500 (TT$9,500) to US$2,500 (TT15,507). A player’s salary will be matched to his seniority.

In addition to this monthly salary, each player that makes the final 11 for any match will be paid in the region of US$1,500 (TT$$9,500).

Ragoonath, the former Test opener said that the players who are retained by the TTCB will have to actually “go to work” for the period of one year.

He said: “When I say ‘go to work’, I mean they will have to make a certain amount of hours in training and will be required to do mentorship, coaching and other civic duties. They will be available to promote sport and a healthy lifestyle as well, for example they can join in the march for breast cancer and Aids that is kept at the Queen’s Park Savannah.”

Players who have regular jobs will then have to make a choice between keeping their jobs, or taking a retainer.

“These guys would have the weigh their options and if they decide against taking a retainer to keep their regular jobs, they would be offered what is called a pay for play contract,” Ragoonath said.

“They will be required to get time-off from their employers to train and play matches and will get just match fees, when they represent the country.

“If the players take up their retainers then they don’t have to worry about getting time off to train and play matches, because they will be full time cricketers.”

This arrangement is already in place in the major cricketing nations such as England, South Africa and Australia.

I have a question about The Bahamas. Is Cricket popular in The Bahamas? Why is The Bahamas not part of the West Indies?

So a few interesting things have happened over the last week or so:

- They finally approved the proposed franchise system for our 4 day season, meaning players can represent other islands and teams can bring in a limited number of overseas players it they wish. More details will be released soon, but on the face of it this is excellent news and should make an enormous difference to the quality of teams such as the Leeward Islands and Guyana who have struggled a bit recently. Hopefully this means there will be no more of players such as Jason Bennett disappearing into the abyss because he plays for a country with such good pace bowling options. It also means the likes of Nicholas Pooran can get some FC cricket under his belt even when Ramdin is available.

- They announced the ODI squad to tour India in a week or so. The big news is the return of Marlon Samuels and Jerome Taylor. Chris Gayle is still injured and so being rested (Dwayne Smith, Leon Johnson and Lendl Simmons will vie for the openers spots). It's a pretty strong squad IMHO, absolutely no shortage of talent in either bowling or batting, some monstrous hitters and athletic fielding. The problem, as always with us, will be finding some consistency.

Is Jason u know who in the squad??
Yep absolutely. The bowling options are Roach, Rampaul, Taylor, Holder and Narine who will be supported by Bravo, Sammy, Pollard and Samuels. Pretty tasty that, certainly the best bowling squad we've put together for some time.

I think some of the "foreign" talent being picked up by th franchises might have a caribbean background to them which would give them an option to pick WI. So for example Keith Baker has been doing very well in county, Tymal Mills has potential as does Bell-Drummand. Whilst Caribbean players who were born in the region like Chesney Hughes and Maurice Chambers can also come back and play...

Another thing is Canadan, Bermudan and American youngsters play for the ICC Americas in our u19s competition so they too could get drafted if they are good enough. All in All it's a great idea.

HERE is the A-team Squad going to Sri-lanka for next months series..

SQUAD

Carlos Brathwaite (Captain)
Sunil Ambris
Devendra Bishoo
Jermaine Blackwood
Kraigg Brathwaite
Sheldon Cottrell
Miguel Cummins
Kirk Edwards
Andre Fletcher
Assad Fudadin
Shannon Gabriel
Nikita Miller
Shane Shillingford
Chadwick Walton
Kraigg, Blackwood and Gabriel are only there to get used to conditions ahead of the India series...happy Ambris has been retained as he seems to be the next batting talent that may come through into the senior side. Fletcher has a big chance to impress as does Cotts and Cummings. Personally i think they should have taken Shacoya Thomas to open with Kraigg and also i wouldn't have picked Walton tbh...nore the three spinners..why not take a younger one for experience?

I regret the extinction of the Native Tasmanians

Victoria in Australia.
Australia is a Cricket country, and there is no point for Victoria to have a separate national team.
I regret that white invaders exterminated the native Tasmanians. If the native Tasmanians had survived, there could be a separate Republic of Tasmania and its national teams of Cricket and other sports.:p

India v West Indies, 1st ODI, Kochi : Full text of Dwayne Bravo's letter to WIPA president Hinds | Cricket News | India v West Indies | ESPN Cricinfo

This is quite shocking from my point of view.

I really think the Windies players get screwed over by their board far too often.
If Dwayne Bravo has got the facts right in his letter to Mr Hinds then there is surely going to be some serious fallout over this. No matter how much players enjoy playing for their country surely they would have to take a stand against such unfair financial penalties. This would seriously disrupt any progress WI may have made recently or hope to in the near future as players would surely opt for more lucrative overseas contracts, be it the various T20 tournaments or county cricket or whatever.

It seems a fair request for the players to remain on the current deal until a reasonable outcome for both sides has been met. Let's hope we get to see the content of Wavell Hinds' reply.
